Weapoon X has been given a stylistic makeover in Marvel's Wolverine: Black, White & Blood series, and adding to the already impressive roster of creators working on the books is  Academy Award-winner John Ridley, who will be making his Marvel Comics debut with issue #3.

As the title implies, the series features art in only three colors - stark black and white, as well as copious amounts of red - as various creators explore the character's decades-long history, with each book featuring three "action-packed adventures," according to Marvel's announcement of the new line of books and will begin releasing in November. Ridley, who won the 2014 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for penning 12 Years A Slave at the 86th Academy Awards will contribute to the series' third issue, expected to release in January.

According to a press release from Marvel, the story will follow Logan's travels throughout Japan, where he'll find himself grappling both with his past and with his longtime foil The Silver Samurai. Ridley's script will be accompanied by art from Jorge Fornés, who most recently worked on the first issue of DC's new Rorscach series. “I can think of no better way to kick off my writing relationship with Marvel Comics than by contributing to a truly fantastic anthology series centered around Wolverine,” Ridley said in anticipation of the series, adding, "Equally exciting is having the story illustrated by Jorge Fornés." He went on to tease that this may be just the first of many collaborations with Marvel and its extensive lineup of classic characters: "I look forward to writing more stories set in the Marvel Universe, and with their roster of iconic characters.

Ridley is just the latest addition to an already stacked roster of heavy-hitting creatives set to work on Black, White & Blood. Vita Ayala, Chris Claremont, Saladin Ahmed, Donny Cates, Ed Brisson, Kelly Thompson, Greg Land, Salvador Larroca, Kev Walker, Chris Bachalo and Leonard Kirk are just some of the other artists that Marvel has already announced will be contributing to the series. Regarding the deep pool of talent working on the books, series editor Mark Basso said, "I can’t stress how exciting it is getting all of these pages from the absolutely killer level of talent assembled for this book. It’s become a hype cliché, but you’ve really never seen anything quite like this from Marvel Comics." With Ridley now added to that list, the pool is getting deeper and deeper.

This won't be the Oscar winner's first foray into the graphic medium. In the past he's worked on such books as The Authority: Human on the Inside, The Razor's Edge: Warblade and The America Way. Another Ridley project, The Other Side of the DC Universe is also set to launch in November and will explore the DC Comics universe through the eyes of heroes of color. And he's also helming an upcoming Batman miniseries which reportedly may reinvent the character as a person of color. So it will be interesting to see such a well-versed and multi-faceted writer tackle a character as iconic as everyone's favorite berserker member of the X-Men, especially when his writing will be paired with Fornés' always superb artwork.

With a character as iconic as Wolverine - who has an almost legendary history to explore - coupled with the creative minds behind the anthology series, Wolverine: Black, White & Blood will be sure to offer readers plenty to sink their claws into and it seems Ridley is as excited to be writing it as fans are to read it.
