Some of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's best weapons can be found in the early game if players only know where to look. Players can make use of a variety of ancient weapons, including swords, polearms, and bows. They can equip up to two at a time, switching between them on the fly, and there's even an option to do a weapon switch attack. Each Wo Long weapon comes with a unique fighting style and special attacks, scaling with one of the game's five elemental stats.

The most important numbers to watch out for when picking weapons in Wo Long, a successor to the Nioh series, are attack power, scaling, Spirit damage, and deflect difficulty. Attack power tells the player how much damage the weapon will output. Scaling indicates which of the player's stats govern the weapon's total damage, and hints at what builds benefit most from each weapon. Spirit damage refers to how quickly the weapon allows the player to break the enemy's stance, opening them up for Fatal Strikes. Deflect difficulty measures how much Spirit is consumed when the player dashes. It's counterintuitive, but higher deflect difficulty percentages are preferable. The following are some of the best early game weapons along these lines.

Wo Long's White Wooden Cudgel Delivers A Satisfying Smack

The player character swings a White Wooden Cudgel against a Yellow Turban enemy in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

The White Wooden Cudgel doesn't have the best attack power, but its speed is high, allowing for adaptability - so long as the player has the best PC performance settings for Wo Long calibrated. It has a high deflect difficulty, which means dashing around doesn't consume much Spirit. The White Wooden Cudgel also increases the Spirit gained from normal attacks by 3.5%, which allows players to unleash devastating specials more frequently. The White Wooden Cudgel's power scales with the Wood Virtue, which is a great choice for new Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty players since it increases max HP. Plus, it's just really satisfying to swing this weapon around and hear it whip through the air.

There are two ways to find the White Wooden Cudgel in the early stages of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. During the tutorial, players will face a podao-wielding mini boss, the enemy leader in the area. He’s not as hard to beat as Wo Long’s first boss, but he does pack a punch. This enemy has a small chance of dropping the White Wooden Cudgel. Even if he doesn't, there's no reason to fret: the White Wooden Cudgel can also be purchased for 10,000 copper from the blacksmith Zhu Xia, whom players can access after defeating the giant monkey boss Zhuyan during the "Two Chivalrous Heroes" quest. Since she's the first merchant players encounter, her prices should be affordable.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's Polearm Podao Slices Up The Competition

The player character swings a Polearm Podao in a wide arc against a black-clad enemy in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's Polearm Podao consists of a curved blade mounted on a pole, which makes it effective at a greater distance. It has a slightly slower attack speed than the starting sword, but also deals more damage. It also has one of the highest Spirit damage stats of the early game, which means it'll open up more opportunities for Fatal Strikes. The Polearm Podao is an extremely effective way to beat Wo Long's first boss Zhang Liang. This is due to the fact that it can sometimes break his guard to deal a little extra damage. Its wide, sweeping attacks are also effective against enemy groups. It scales with Water Virtue, so it's a decent choice for stealth builds.

The Polearm Podao is a little harder to find, but it can be dropped by enemies in the starting area. It requires leaving things up to chance, but it couldn't hurt for rookie players to accrue some Qi and morale by grinding against these early game enemies in hopes of a weapon drop. This process goes even faster if players take advantage of Wo Long’s multiplayer feature. The Polearm Podao can also be purchased from Zhu Xia for 10,000 copper during the "Two Chivalrous Heroes" chapter.

The Bamboo Bow Is Wo Long's Best Early Ranged Weapon

The player character aims the Bamboo Bow at a zombie enemy in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

Wo Long allows players to use both melee and ranged attacks against its many difficult enemies. Players can have up to two melee and two ranged weapons equipped at a time, and switch between them on the fly. Bows and crossbows are a useful tool for taking out enemies from a distance, which plays into the game’s stealth mechanics, allowing players to use fewer of Wo Long’s Dragon Cure Pots. Since it scales with Water, the Bamboo Bow is a great starting point for stealth builds. While it's not the best ranged option in the game, the Bamboo Bow is likely the first bow players will encounter in Wo Long, and will get the job done in the early stages.

The Bamboo Bow is most readily found during the "Two Chivalrous Heroes" level. It can be looted from a body near the second Battle Flag, right in front of the gate to the burned-out village that players must pass through as part of the main quest - it's difficult to miss. However, with a little luck, it may also be dropped by some of Wo Long's bow-wielding enemies. While the Bamboo Bow is a good choice for the early stages of Wo Long’s Three Kingdoms-inspired story, players would do well to search high and low for a replacement like the Feathered Cavalry Bow, which is a rarer drop.

Wo Long's Dual Marquis Halberds Create A Wall Of Damage

The player character unleashes a special move with the Dual Marquis Halberds in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

The Dual Marquis Halberds are some of the fastest swinging weapons in the early hours of Wo Long. Swinging them around rapidly, players can easily fend off enemies coming from all directions at once. For their small size, they also have an impressive damage output with 67 base attack and 42 Spirit attack. They scale with Fire and Water virtues, which in conjunction will allow the player to build up Spirit rapidly, so they can use special attacks in quick succession. The Dual Marquis Halberds' special ability reduces how much Spirit guarding consumes, so they can help the player stand their ground against enemy onslaughts, proving a worthy weapon for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty beginner strategies.

The easiest way to add the Dual Marquis Halberds to the Wo Long arsenal is to buy them from Zhu Xia for 10,000 coppers. They may also be looted from enemies in the village during the "Two Chivalrous Heroes" chapter, but they seem to be a rare drop.

Enemies in Wo Long drop weapons like hot potatoes, but there's still an element of luck involved in racking up new weapons. Weapons are ranked by a rarity stat, signified by one to three stars. Weapon drops' rarity is randomly generated, but thankfully, it doesn't affect their base stats - rarity only determines how many special attacks can be performed with each weapon. Between the high drop rate and the relative irrelevance of rarity, it's not necessary to grind for decent weapons in the early hours of Wo Long’s Chinese historical epic. Even finding one- or two-star versions of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty's best early game weapons is enough to significantly power up the player character.
