What has the cast of Wizards of Waverly Place been up to since the show came to a close in 2012? Created by Todd J. Greenwald, the Disney Channel original series ran 106 episodes from October 12, 2007 to January 6, 2012, and followed three young wizards as they tried to balance their everyday lives with their magical ones.

As with most Disney Channel shows, by the time Wizards of Waverly Place ended, the faces of its characters had etched their way into the hearts and minds of a youthful generation. These sort of impressions are hard for many actors to shake, but nevertheless, the nature of the entertainment industry dictates that they must at least try.

With that in mind, the cast of Wizards of Waverly Place have all moved on from their roles in the Disney Channel show. Some have found even more success in the entertainment industry since the family's Greenwich Village sandwich shop officially closed its doors; others left the industry all together.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez Wizards Waverly Place

Selena Gomez played Alex Russo, the main character of the series and the middle child in the Russo's wizarding family. Without a doubt the biggest star of the series during and since, Selena Gomez has enjoyed a bountiful career in the film, television, and music industries. Beyond her Disney career, which also included the well-regarded Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, she hoped to really branch out as an actress.

During this time, immediately following the close of the Wizards series, she starred in the animated film Hotel Transylvania alongside Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Adam Samberg, as well as the critical and commercial bomb Getaway, and Harmony Korine's controversial exploitation film Spring Breakers. Following these comparatively small successes, Gomez decided to head back into music and released her debut solo album Stars Dance in 2013. The album released at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, and sold 97,000 copies in its first week.

Her second album, Revival, released two years later and met similar success, making Gomez one of only six female artists at the time to have three singles from the same album top the charts. In between her music and her highly-publicized relationship with Canadian singer/songwriter Justin Bieber, Gomez found time to cameo and play small supporting roles in films such as The Big Short and the Seth Rogen, Zac Efron comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. She has also starred in The Fundamentals of Caring, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016.

Recently, Gomez served as an executive producer on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, in addition to lending her voice talents to the upcoming Robert Downey Jr. film Dolittle.

David Henrie

Starting at the age of 18, David Henrie starred in Wizards of Waverly Place as Justin Russo, the oldest child and son of the Russo family. Like Gomez, Henrie appeared in the film Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, though he did not return to the role for the special episode The Wizards Return: Alex vs Alex, which premiered a year after the show finished.

In addition to Wizards of Waverly Place. Henrie's Disney career brought him a role in the Disney Channel Original Movie Dadnapped, which co-starred Emily Osment, and he also made a guest appearance as himself in 2 episodes of Jonas.

Outside of the Mouse House (aside from a small part in the biographical drama Walt Before Mickey), Henrie also appeared in Grown Ups 2 opposite Taylor Lautner and Adam Sandler. And in 2014, he played the lead in the true story basketball film 1000 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story. Perhaps Henrie's most recognizable role since Wizards would be that of Ted Mosby's son who appears regularly at the beginning of episodes throughout the television series How I Met Your Mother.

Since then, Henrie's interest for directing manifested itself in the 2018 coming-of-age film This Is the Year, which he also starred in and co-wrote. Married to former Miss Delaware Maria Cahill, he is also the father to one daughter.

Jake T. Austin

Jake T. Austin played Max Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, the youngest Russo child and son of the family. In addition to Wizards, Austin's career as a child actor included the voice of Diego on the Nickelodean animated series Go, Diego, Go!, as well as co-starring roles in Hotel For Dogs and the ABC Family series The Fosters.

In 2011, Austin also voiced the orphaned Brazillian boy Fernando in the 20th Century Fox animated musical franchise Rio. Then in 2016, he lent his voice to the character of Blue Beetle in the DC Comics animated direct-to-video film Justice League vs. Teen Titans. While his film and television career has pretty much stopped — save for a quick appearance as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars — Austin has remained very active in his charity work, including helping the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Starlight Children's Foundation, and Variety's Power of Youth initiative.

Jennifer Stone

On Wizards of Waverly Place, Jennifer Stone played Harper Finkle, Alex Russo's best friend and one of the only main characters who is not a wizard. Also known for her supporting role as Martha in Secondhand Lions — the first of her career for which she received a Young Artist Award nomination — Stone's career outside of Wizards of Waverly Place has not amounted to much entertainment-wise.

After being diagnosed with Type 1.5 diabetes in March 2013, however, Stone left acting to pursue a nursing degree and has since found a new purpose in life.

Maria Canals-Barrera

Maria Canals-Barrera starred as Theresa Russo, Alex, Justin and Max's mother on Wizards of Waverly Place. Beforehand, she was known for her roles as Hawkgirl on the Cartoon Network Justice League series and Paulina in Danny Phantom.

Since Wizards, her biggest role has been that of the mother of Fernando Hernandez-Guerrero-Fernanda-Guerrero on the Netflix series and reboot Fuller House.

David DeLuise

David DeLuise played Jerry Russo, the father of the Russos and the owner of their New York sandwich shop. Since Wizards of Waverly Place ended, DeLuise has become a prolific character actor, performing in strange off-beat comedies and in various supporting roles on different TV shows.
