Roald Dahl created many popular children’s stories over the years, including The Witches. This story is about a British boy and his Norwegian grandma going up against witches and, specifically, the Grand High Witch.
In the past, there was a play, a radio version and a movie in 1990 (this one starred actress Anjelica Huston), and all of these were all inspired by this book. Come next year, a new film will be released to tell a new generation this exciting tale. This is what is known so far about it, along with what fans are hoping to see in it!
10 Know: It’s Coming In October 2020
This book is a dark fantasy, and this full-length flick will be an adventure comedy for families. It is currently in the post-production phase, and it is set to come out on October 9, 2020, thanks to director Robert Zemeckis.
Since this story does feature witches, it does have some sort of creepy parts, but it is also full of humor, wonder and magic, as it focuses on a young boy, as well. The fact that it comes out during the month of Halloween seems like a great fit, though.
9 Hope: It Is Just The Right Amount Of Scary
This is something that is targeted towards a young audience, but fans of all ages can enjoy it. Imagine being the main character, though: In the book, he is playing in his tree house when he sees a woman dressed in black looking at him, and she tries to lure him with a snake.
That could be very frightening for a child! Therefore, we hope there are some eerie scenes… yet not so eerie that it keeps a large number of kiddos from watching and enjoying this film.
8 Know: It Will Star Anne Hathaway
As mentioned, Anjelica Huston played the Grand High Witch in the older movie version of this tale. In next year’s work, however, Anne Hathaway will be the Grand High Witch.
Some of this actress’ other notable roles include Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries, Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada, the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland, Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises and Amelia Brand in Interstellar. IMDb also lists Stanley Tucci, Octavia Spencer and Chris Rock as celebs who will play a part in this.
7 Hope: It Will Introduce Some New Stars
The IMDb page for this new flick also lists out Simon Manyondaas a Sous Chef, Angus Wright as a Waiter, Codie-Lei Eastick as Bruno Jenkins, Me'sha Bryan as a Chambermaid and Joseph Zinyemba as a Basketball Kid, to name a few.
Codie-Lei Eastick, for instance, portrayed a Young Watson in Holmes & Watson from 2018, yet he is not a huge star and has not been featured in anything else. Therefore, it is always nice to see new faces and to meet new celebs.
6 Know: It’s Based On A Book
Roald Dahl wrote James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and The BFG, to name a few, and all of these have been made into beloved films. Next up is a modern-day movie version of The Witches.
This book focused on a boy and his grandmother. It was set during a time when witches who hated children were a thing. And it involved the boy and his grandmother having to try and stop these witches.
5 Hope: It Features The Best Parts Of The Novel
The Grand High Witch taking off her face, the free candies that are full of a potion, the witches getting taken out by everyone after they are turned into mice…
There are some very notable parts of this story that would be amazing to see on the big screen next year. While every version of a tale is a bit different, fans are surely anxious to sit back and watch a retelling of this classic and known story.
4 Know: It Will Focus On The Plot From The Book
In 1990, there was a film that was inspired by this novel, and in 2020, a new film will be released… a film that will be more focused on the original story.
There are a few details that have been released about this project, so it is already known that it will feature a boy going up against witches. It will be interesting to see what else is taken from the original story, in order to create a retelling of such an exciting tale.
3 Hope: It Puts An Emphasis On This Familial Bond
The two main characters from The Witches are a boy and his grandma, and there is nothing like a bond with a grandparent. Plus, these two family members are going up against witches, meaning they surely have a connection and a strength like no other!
Relationships of all types are seen in various films, and it is always so lovely to see an older person and a younger one share an experience and grow even closer.
2 Know: It Will Be Set In Alabama In The ‘60s
There is one known way this movie will be different, and it has to do with the setting. Roald Dahl’s story took place in Norway and the United Kingdom, as it was about a British boy and his Norwegian grandmother.
The movie that is coming next year will be set in Alabama and in the 1960s, and the boy will be a black American boy.
1 Hope: It Is Good
Over the years, there are tons of books that have been made into movies, films that have transformed into TV shows, series that have been based on novels and so on.
Many people believe that original versions can’t be beat, yet there are remakes and reboots that have become fan favorites, as well. When it comes to The Witches’ film for 2020, we just hope one thing, above all else: Let it be as good as we remember this story to be!
