The trailer for The Witcher season 2 revealed Yennefer’s survival after the Battle of Sodden Hill and her and Fringilla being taken prisoners – but who captured the two sorceresses and how will they escape? The fantasy genre has seen a variety of worlds with their own mythologies, and one that becomes more and more popular with time is that of The Witcher, created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher is a series of novels and short stories that became widely known when they were adapted into video games and into a movie and a TV series in Poland in 2001 and 2002.

In 2019, The Witcher finally got its first English adaptation, debuting on Netflix to a lot of success and getting renewed for a second season even before the first one was out. The series approached Sapkowski's characters and stories in a very peculiar way, with a non-linear narrative that followed three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of season 1. The Witcher, then, follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), the title monster hunter; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra. All of them are coming back in The Witcher season 2, but when it comes to Yennefer, details about her role in these new episodes remain a mystery.

What’s known about The Witcher season 2 is that it’s mostly based on the book Blood of Elves and it will see Geralt taking Ciri to Kaer Morhen, the old keep where the witchers from the School of the Wolf were trained, including Geralt. There, Ciri will be trained by Geralt, his friends and fellow witchers Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz), Lambert (Paul Bullion), Coën (Yasen Atour), and their mentor Vesemir (Kim Bodnia). Elsewhere, Jaskier (Joey Batey) will be imprisoned and Yennefer will be found by the Nilfgaardian army, who will take her prisoner – however, they will be ambushed by other forces that will take Yennefer and fellow sorceress Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) with them, and their kidnappers will be a group of elves.

The Witcher season 2 Yennefer Fringilla elves

The full trailer for The Witcher season 2 features brief looks at Yennefer and Fringilla in captivity, and it can be seen that their captors are elves. Now, in the trailer, right before the elves are shown taking Yennefer and Fringilla with them, there’s a shot of an unknown location that fans of The Witcher have theorized is Thanedd Island, a key area in this universe. Thanedd Island is located in the bay northwest of Gors Velen in Temeria, to which it’s connected by a bridge, and is divided into three main areas: Loxia, Garstand, and Aretuza, the magic academy Yennefer and Fringilla met at. The sorceresses, then, could be taken to Thanedd Island by the elves, though for what purpose is still unknown, and as other shots in The Witcher season 2 trailer show Aretuza and Tissaia de Vries (MyAnna Buring) reuniting with Yennefer (most likely at the academy), she and Fringilla could be rescued by Tissaia (or other sorceresses) and taken back to Aretuza, where they will be safe again.

It won’t be long until fans of The Witcher reunite with Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer and meet all the characters joining season 2, as well as learn what their roles in this new season will be. Of course, the biggest mystery around the kidnapping of Yennefer and Fringilla is the elves’ purpose (if any), and it’s also to be seen if being forced to spend time together will lead the two sorceresses to form an alliance or will make their rivalry even worse.
