Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich says The Witcher season 3 will be the show's biggest yet and teases the groundwork laid in season 2. Henry Cavill leads the cast of the Netflix fantasy drama as Geralt of Rivia, the titular monster hunter as he ventures across the medieval landscape known as the Continent and learns of his intertwined destiny with Cintra's crowned princess Cirilla. The Witcher season 2 will pick up after the explosive events of the season 1 finale as Geralt and Ciri have finally united and head off to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen to train for the battles ahead while quarter-elf sorceress Yennefer finds herself captured after the Battle of Sodden Hill and must plan a way to escape.

The Witcher is based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novels of the same name and has received generally positive reviews from critics and been a ratings smash for Netflix. The streamer is streamlining development on more of the property with the live-action prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, a second animated film and a kids-friendly series. With a few months to go until the show returned, Netflix also doubled down on their confidence and renewed The Witcher season 3 and though it is a ways away, audiences are getting exciting insight into what's to come.

Ahead of the show's return on Netflix, Hissrich spoke with Tech Radar and teased development on The Witcher season 3. The showrunner says that season 2 will lay the groundwork for season 3 to be the biggest yet, but notes that the new chapter is still in the early stages. See what Hissrich said below:

"This is our last week [December 3] in the writers’ room. We’re almost done with the scripting phase, and it’s amazing. I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt. I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen. But the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season."

Hissrich's tease of The Witcher season 3 being the biggest yet for the series should come as an exciting hint for what's to come in the future, namely in her note that The Time of Contempt will serve as the primary basis for the chapter. The second novel in The Witcher book franchise delivered a number of key plot points and character developments that the series has already begun building to in season 1, namely that of Ciri's latent magical powers that the trailers for The Witcher season 2 have pointed towards being explored. The book saw Yennefer take Ciri to the Aretuza school of magic, where the young princess would prove a bit rebellious and whose actions would lead to the reunion of Geralt and Yennefer.

A set video for The Witcher season 2 has already pointed towards Geralt and Yennefer reuniting at some point in the next chapter, though how long the two remain together is unknown. With Triss Merigold also set to be a larger part of season 2 in comparison to the debut, audiences are certainly eager to see how the iconic love triangle between Geralt, Yennefer and Triss plays out in the series. Only time will tell when The Witcher season 2 arrives on December 17.
