The Witcher Season 4 Will Replace Cavill with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt

With The Witcher season 3 currently in production, the series’ writers and producers have apparently already mapped out season 4. Inspired by the stories of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski as well as CD Projekt’s video games, Netflix’s The Witcher follows Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia — the eponymous monster hunter — Anya Chalotra as the sorceress, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allan as Ciri of Cintra, a young woman with the power to transform the Continent. The Witcher season 1 released in December 2019 and introduced its characters by adapting stories from Sapkowski’s The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.

The Witcher season 2 looked to Blood of Elves for inspiration when it was released in December 2021. It saw Geralt, united with his Child Surprise, Ciri, travel to the Kaer Morhen and meet Witchers led by Kim Bodnia’s Vesemir. Throughout the season, it was revealed that Ciri has Elder blood and is connected to an Elven prophecy tied to the fate of the world. Filming for The Witcher season 3 officially began this month, but it seems that future plans are already developing.

During a recent interview on Brigade Radio, director Stephen Surjik said The Witcher season 4 has already been “mapped out.” Surjik, who helmed season 2 episodes “A Grain of Truth” and Kaer Morhen,” is set to return for two episodes of season 3. Although he’s unsure if he’ll be back for season 4, it certainly sounds that way. Read Surjik's full quote below:

"The writers and producers mapped out Season 4. Oh yeah. I don't know if I'm part of that mapping program, but at least they told me that they're mapping it out.”

Geralt, Ciri, and Yen in another sphere in The Witcher

The Witcher season 2 became one of Netflix's most-watched shows ever, so it comes as no surprise its creative team is in it for the long haul. Still, while viewership and critical reception for season 2 were strong, The Witcher's audience rating on sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic was weaker than the season that preceded it. This was partially due to long-time Witcher fans being upset with changes made to the source material, including (but not limited to) Eskel’s death, Yennefer’s storyline, Voleth Meir, and those White Flame and Wild Hunt reveals — which happened much later in the novels. Perhaps The Witcher’s biggest challenge moving forward will concern how it chooses to pace its story with the books.

The Witcher season 3 will draw from Time of Contempt and presumably see the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Nilfgaard, and the Elves all hunt Ciri as she trains with Yennefer at Aretuza. Despite having a minor role in the aforementioned novel, season 3 could also include the Wild Hunt. The series already introduced them ahead of schedule and seems poised to establish them as a looming threat. The Witcher season 3 may continue skipping ahead, cherry picking elements from Baptism of Fire, Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. While season 4 should focus on Baptism of Fire, there’s no telling where The Witcher’s story will be or how many seasons are tentatively planned. Regardless, as long as the show’s fanbase remains intact, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and company should have no problem telling their story in full. That said, season 3 likely won’t arrive until sometime next year as the prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is set to drop later this year.
