The Witcher season 3 has officially begun filming, and to celebrate the occasion, an official image of Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt back together has been revealed, showing that season 3 is already fixing the series’ worst main character mistakes. Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is one of the most popular fantasy worlds thanks to its video game adaptations, and in 2019, it finally got its first English language adaptation thanks to Netflix, and quickly became one of the streaming giant’s most popular and successful titles.

Netflix’s The Witcher approached the source novels and short stories in a unique way by focusing on three different characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of season 1. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan), and while Geralt and Ciri spent a lot more time together in The Witcher season 2 as Ciri trained at Kaer Morhen, Yennefer was left aside with her own struggles, and fans didn’t get to see them together until the season finale, where Yennefer sacrificed herself to save Ciri, but she survived and they all decided to stay together.

Fans of The Witcher were understandably disappointed that Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer spent most of season 2 apart, more so as the book this season was mostly based on (Blood of Elves) sees the relationship between Ciri and Yennefer grow into a mother-daughter one, and the series completely changed that by turning Yennefer into an antagonist and a manipulative figure. The tense relationship between Geralt and Yennefer wasn’t fully solved either, as they didn’t share much time in season 2, but all these mistakes seem to be on their way to being fixed in The Witcher season 3 based on the first image and the synopsis that were shared on the show’s official Twitter account.

The Witcher Season 3 Set

So far, the two seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher have kept Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer apart in different ways and for a variety of reasons, and this has ended up affecting the arcs of some of them. The Witcher season 1, with its non-linear timeline, saw these characters mostly on their own, with the only ones sharing some time together being Geralt and Yennefer, and Ciri didn’t come across Geralt until (literally) the final scene of the season. The Witcher season 2 didn’t fix the problem, as even though Geralt and Ciri spent more time together, Yennefer’s story developed separately, and she wasn’t the mentor to Ciri that fans were expecting, and instead she wanted to capture Ciri to get her powers back. However, the plot summary for The Witcher season 3 reveals that Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will now be together as they’re “determined to protect [his] newly-reunited family”, and instead of Kaer Morhen, this season will see them hiding and training in Aretuza.

By finally having Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer together in The Witcher season 3, the writers are not only fixing one of the show’s biggest mistakes but also further developing their stories, especially Ciri’s, as both Geralt and Yennefer are key in her training and her journey of self-discovery. Through this, The Witcher season 3 will also have to address the relationship between Geralt and Yennefer, which has been everything but easy, and they now have common goals in protecting and training Ciri and also protecting this new family they have formed.
