Production on The Witcher season 3 has begun, and the official synopsis for this new season has been revealed, hinting at how much Ciri’s powers will change and increase in this new season. Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher became widely popular when the books and short stories were adapted into video games, and this universe’s popularity increased when it got its first English language adaptation thanks to Netflix in 2019, becoming one of the streaming giant’s most successful TV shows.

Netflix’s The Witcher had a non-linear narrative in its first season and followed three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan), with the latter taking the spotlight in the second season. With half the Continent looking for her, Geralt took Ciri to Kaer Morhen in The Witcher season 2, where she began her training and she was later (briefly) trained in magic by Yennefer, but her powers still caused a lot of chaos.

Luckily, The Witcher has been renewed for a third season and filming has officially begun. The official Twitter account for The Witcher shared a photo of Cavill, Chalotra, and Allan together on set, hinting at these three finally sharing more time together, and it also shared the official plot summary for this upcoming season. The Witcher season 3 will see Geralt and Yennefer hiding Ciri and taking her to Aretuza, not only for her protection but also in hopes of better understanding her powers. Ciri will finally be properly trained by Yennefer, meaning that the audience will finally see the extent of her powers, as so far only a small part of them has been shown.

Yennefer and Ciri ride horses in a green field in The Witcher.

During her training at Kaer Morhen, Ciri was trained in combat and agility, but not in magic and control of her powers, so by the end of The Witcher season 2, Ciri’s powers are still out of control and are pretty dangerous, and Yennefer now has a clear idea of the extent of Ciri’s chaos and why she’s both a threat and a target for many. In the Witcher books, Geralt asks Yennefer for help in training Ciri and her magic, and she does so during Ciri’s time at the Temple of Melitele. Yennefer teaches Ciri about magic, Chaos, and how to control it, and they later travel to Aretuza – however, their journey turns out to be very complicated. The Witcher season 3 synopsis not only hints at Yennefer and Ciri spending more time together and thus the young princess being properly trained in magic and Chaos but also the problems they will encounter on their way to Aretuza and even at the academy, as many enemies are living in it.

With all the enemies that emerged in The Witcher season 2 and most of them now going after Ciri for different reasons (most notably The Wild Hunt), the princess of Cintra will need to learn and master her powers in order to not only defend herself but also Geralt and Yennefer, as even though the witcher and the sorcerer are fully capable of fighting, they don’t have the same power as Ciri. There’s a lot to learn about Ciri’s powers in The Witcher, and season 3 seems to be the season where viewers will learn what she can do and to what extent alongside Ciri herself.
