In anticipation of The Witcher season 2, a new trailer focuses on the interwoven journeys of Geralt and Yennefer in season 1. Unlike the work of Andrzej Sapkowski — which focuses primarily on Geralt — The Witcher uses three timelines to introduce Henry Cavill’s titular, mutant monster hunter, Freya Allan’s Ciri, and Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer as their paths gradually converge. For example, Ciri becomes Geralt’s child of surprise The Witcher season 1, episode 4 and the witcher meets the mage in episode 5, “Bottled Appetites.”

The Witcher season 1 adapted many of the short stories in Sapkowski’s The Last Wish, including its eponymous one. In episode 5, Geralt takes Jaskier (Joey Batey) to Yennefer and asks her to heal his bard companion. Ultimately, Yennefer attempts to manipulate the djinn responsible for Jaskier’s condition. Unaware that Geralt is the djinn’s master (and not Jaskier), this puts Yennefer’s life in peril. Thankfully, Geralt makes a mysterious wish to save Yennefer’s life, but neither the audience nor Yennefer knows the specifics of the wish. In the source material, while it isn’t written for readers, Yennefer does hear Geralt’s last wish. On the other hand, The Witcher can’t communicate Geralt's words loud enough for Yennefer to hear without the viewers also knowing. In The Witcher season 1, episode 6, “Rare Species,” Yennefer breaks things off with Geralt under the assumption that their love isn’t real, but merely a byproduct of magic. Season 1 ends with Geralt believing Yennefer to be dead.

Now, The Witcher’s official Twitter account has shared a new season 2 trailer. The video recounts the tumultuous relationship between Geralt and Yennefer, as well as the wish that changed their lives. In particular, the video asks one very important question: is it real? Check it out below:

After doing his best to let Yennefer go, Geralt finally finds Ciri in the The Witcher season 1 finale. Season 2 will look to Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, seeing Geralt and Ciri travel to Kaer Morhen, the old fortress where Geralt, now Ciri, is trained by the School of the Wolf. Season 2 will also introduce fellow witchers in Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir (Kim Bodnia), Lambert (Paul Bullion), and the elven sorceress Francesca Findabair (Mecia Simson). Outside of this plotline, Yennefer is being held by Nilfgaardian forces. However, she’s sure to unite with Geralt and Ciri at some point as Cavill and Chalotra were spotted together during production. However, the pair could’ve easily been filming a flashback.

The Witcher has already disproved the idea that witchers don’t feel. While season 1 challenged Geralt’s proclivity to avoid connections, season 2 will force him to become Ciri’s mentor/surrogate father. If Yennefer does indeed meet up with the pair, that relationship should have a dramatic impact on the mage, who desperately wants to be a mother. Regardless, The Witcher season 2 should further explore the nature of destiny on the Continent. It’s clear that Geralt’s wish bound his fate to Yennefer’s, but it’s not known exactly what this means. If Yennefer dies, does Geralt fall as well, and vice versa? The Witcher is sure to provide some (vague) answers when season 2 debuts on Netflix on December 17.
