Netflix debuts a new The Witcher season 2 teaser trailer offering the first look at the return of Henry Cavill's titular protagonist, Geralt of Rivia. The series is based on the novels of the same name from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and centers on Geralt as he travels around the medieval land known as The Continent and faces off against supernatural foes. The property first rose to prominence for American audiences in the late 2000s with CD Projekt Red's critically acclaimed video game series based on the novels.

After a poorly-received film and TV adaptation in the novels' home country of Poland, development began on a new Witcher at Netflix as a movie before an executive at the streaming platform pushed for a series instead. With Cavill signing on in late 2018, the show debuted to solid reviews in late 2019 and strong viewership for Netflix, quickly landing a season 2 order as well as the animated spin-off film Nightmare of the Wolf and live-action prequel limited series Blood Origin. Though initially hampered due to Cavill's on-set injury and COVID-19-related production delays, the next chapter finally wrapped in April and the streaming platform is building the hype for its arrival.

On the heels of announcing a special virtual convention co-hosted with CD Projekt Red, Netflix has debuted a new The Witcher season 2 teaser trailer. Hidden amongst cryptic flashes of the dangers to come for the character is the first look at the return of Cavill's Geralt. Check out the teaser below:

This isn't the first brief teaser the streaming platform has released for the long-awaited season 2, but it's arguably the one sure to send fans reeling with excitement with the return of Cavill's Geralt. Plot details are still generally being kept under wraps regarding what is to be expected from the next chapter, though Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has previously teased that the various characters will have further interactions with one another in comparison to the nonlinear storytelling season 1 encompassed. Now that the characters and universe have been properly established with the help of adapting short stories set prior to the mainline novels, season 2 will likely start to delve into the main narrative.

With that being said, there is still some time to wait for fans to learn more about The Witcher season 2. But with the special WitcherCon event Netflix and CD Projekt Red are hosting this July promising to bring exclusive reveals for both the series and video game franchise, those who have followed both iterations of the material won't have to wait for long to see what the future holds for the property. The Witcher season 2 is currently slated to premiere later this year on Netflix.
