UPDATE: The Witcher Season 2 Production Halts Due to Coronavirus

Netflix initially allowed The Witcher season 2 to continue filming, despite halting production on all films and TV series in the US and Canada amid rising coronavirus concerns. As the US sees an increase in deadly COVID-19 cases, the entertainment industry is doing everything in its power to slow the infection rate by stopping productions and sending employees home. Witcher is currently filming its second season in the UK, which has seen 1,143 cases of coronavirus and counting. The series, based on a famous novel that became a hit video game, was one of Netflix's most-watched series despite harsh reviews from TV critics.

A Witcher-dedicated news site, redanianintelligence.com, said their sources tell them there have been "no major production shifts." Their sources also note, one scene was rescheduled due to cast availability, but nothing coronavirus related has delayed production. It seems like Netflix is anxious to get the second season out to viewers, after all, they renewed the series back in November 2019 with a 2021 release date. However, just one day later,  redanianintelligence.com reports that Netflix has gone ahead and halted production after all.

However, as coronavirus cases continue to rise and the UK struggles to mitigate the outbreak, it's possible Witcher will shut down production eventually. Several countries, including Italy, have already gone into lockdown. The US is slowly canceling events, closing schools, and restaurants. With almost as many reported cases, the UK isn't far behind.

Most of The Witcher season 1 was based on the first two collections of Witcher stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, splitting the narrative between multiple timelines. By the end of season 1, however, the three timelines converge, indicating season 2 will follow a more linear path. Cavill returns as Geralt, along with Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri, Joey Batey as Geralt's bard friend, Jaskier, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia de Vries, Lars Mikkelsen as Stregobor, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, and Eamon Farren as Cahir.
