The Witcher’s Henry Cavill helped design Geralt’s season 2 armor alongside costume designer Lucinda Wright. Based on the stories of Andrzej Sapkowski, Netflix’s The Witcher debuted in 2019, starring Cavill as its eponymous monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia. While the books and video games primarily focus on Geralt, season 1’s non-linear narrative also told the origin stories of Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan). At the end of season 1, all three timelines officially converged with Geralt finding Ciri and Yennefer becoming a prisoner of Nilfgaard (although Geralt believes her to be dead).

When season 2 premieres on December 17, The Witcher will take Geralt and Ciri to the former’s childhood home, Kaer Morhen, the old fortress where witchers are trained. Audiences will meet a slew of other witchers led by Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir (Kim Bodnia), whose origin was explored in the anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. In addition to its more linear narrative and new locations, The Witcher season 2 has Geralt sporting a new suit of armor—an upgrade from season 1’s light leather armor/heavily plated hybrid reminiscent of the video games.

In a recent interview with Netflix, Cavill talked about designing season 2’s armor with Wright. His new look consists of multipart shoulder plating, making it easier to film in, especially when swinging a sword at monsters and men. Read what he had to say below:

“It’s a new look, and the redesign has made it a lot easier for me to move and fight,” said Cavill. “I helped to design [it] with our wonderful costume designer, Lucinda Wright, and we put a lot of work into it in quite a short space of time…Geralt had to find new armor, but he hadn't had the opportunity to stop anywhere to buy armor or make it, so he delved into the dungeons of Kaer Morhen and found something very old and from a different era, but still serviceable."

Henry Cavill as Geralt in The Witcher Season 2 Poster

Cavill, who is an avid player/fan of The Witcher franchise, has made it clear Geralt is personal to him, and he intends to portray him to the best of his ability. So, it makes sense that he’d want to be involved in designing his look. Geralt’s new armor will appear in the third episode of season 2, “What Is Lost.” At the beginning of that episode, Geralt will be working with a mass of leather and studs while Ciri practices with a wooden sword. One of his motivations for crafting new armor is to battle even more formidable monsters in season 2. Like Cavill, Bodnia has also talked about being involved in designing Vesemir’s look for The Witcher season 2. In particular, the sword he wears on his back is meant to evoke the aesthetics of a Samurai warrior.

Adapting much of Sapkowski’s Blood of ElvesThe Witcher season 2 will see Geralt step into a mentor role, not unlike Vesemir, albeit with a little help. As Ciri grapples with her own unique set of powers, she will train at Kaer Morhen with Vesemir teaching her about monsters and herbs, Lambert (Paul Bullion) and Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz) training her in the art of combat, and Coën (Yasen Atour) training her to use a sword. That being said, Ciri will also have a new costume for season 2 as both she and Geralt take a step towards destiny.
