Henry Cavill's Geralt, Freya Allen's Ciri and Kim Bodnia's Vesemir pose for The Witcher season 2 family portrait ahead of the show's premiere. The next chapter of Netflix's hit series adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels picks up right from the season 1 finale as Geralt is united with Ciri and learns of their intertwined destiny while still reeling from believing Yennefer to have died during the Battle of Sodden Hill. Geralt and Ciri head to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen in order to train the Cintran Princess to prepare for the battle ahead as the Continent's kings, elves, humans and demons all close in on the city's walls.

Alongside Cavill, Allen and Bodnia, The Witcher season 2 will see the returns of Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, Eamon Farren and MyAnna Buring. The series has been a smash hit for Netflix since premiering in late 2019, scoring generally positive reviews from critics and becoming the streamer's second-most-watched series of the year behind Stranger Things season 3. This success has led to Netflix further building out its franchise, including the anime prequel film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the in-production live-action prequel series Blood Origin and another animated film and kids-friendly series.

The arrival of Vesemir in The Witcher season 2 has captured the attention of many fans of Sapkowski's books and CD Projekt Red's video game adaptations of the source material. Vesemir exists as the oldest living Witcher in the universe and serves as both a father figure and a mentor to Geralt in his younger years, the latter of which was teased in the recently released Witcher: Nightmare of the World that revolved around the origin story for his character and how he would come to begin Geralt's training. Vesemir would also serve as one of Ciri's mentors during her time at Kaer Morhen alongside Geralt, Triss and the soon-to-be introduced Coën, Lambert and Eskel in the upcoming season of the series.

Anticipation for The Witcher season 2 has been high since season 1's cliffhanger finale and trailers promising plenty of further monster hunting and the beginning of Ciri's training at Kaer Morhen. Expectations were recently raised even higher as not only was the show renewed for season 3 earlier this year but Sapkowski has also come out and praised the work of showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and her writers room on season 2. The wait for The Witcher season 2 is nearly over as the show returns on December 17.
