The Witcher season 2 image reveals a new look at Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia ready for battle. Based on the work of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, Netflix’s The Witcher debuted its first season in late 2019 and quickly became one of the streaming service’s most popular titles. Its success has already inspired a live-action prequel series entitled The Witcher: Blood Origin. The flagship series follows Cavill as its eponymous mutated monster hunter as he travels the Continent slaying in exchange for coin. While the books and video games primarily focus on Geralt, season 1’s semi-non-linear narrative also told the origin stories of Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) and Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan). At the end of season 1, Geralt’s timeline finally converges with his Child of Surprise as he finds Ciri.

Assuming the fantasy series would resonate with fans new and old, Netflix renewed The Witcher for another eight-episode season before the first even debuted. Despite this early renewal, production has been repeatedly delayed due to COVID-19. Finally, season 2 is complete and set to premiere this December. It will begin to adapt Sapkowski’s second book, Blood of Elves, and take Geralt and Ciri to Kaer Morhen, the old fortress where witchers are trained. Some of the most notable additions to the cast are fellow witchers led by Geralt’s mentor Vesemir (Kim Bodnia), whose origin was explored in the anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. As was the case with season 1, there will be plenty of sword fighting and/or action in season 2.

With just over three months remaining until the debut of the second season, EW has revealed an exclusive look at The Witcher. The latest imagine shows Geralt welding his sword, mostly likely training at Kaer Morhen. Check out the ominous photo below:

Cavill has forged a reputation for doing the majority of his own stunts and fight choreography. Last December, the actor suffered a leg injury (presumably on the set of The Witcher), further complicating production. Much of season 2’s promotional material shows Geralt with his leg/knee wrapped—it’s unclear if his injury was written into the show somehow. Regardless, Geralt’s proclivity for swordplay will undoubtedly be inherited by Ciri as the former acts as a mentor. As previously mentioned, the decrepit Kaer Morhen is where witchers are/were trained, but it’s also Geralt’s home. Moving forward, Ciri will be educated and trained by the School of the Wolf. However, she likely won’t become a witcher as women aren’t said to survive the process known as the Trail of Dreams.

Geralt will likely need to be ready for battle at the start of The Witcher’s second season. Kaer Morhen can only be reached by “The Trail,” an extremely dangerous road plagued by mages and priests who view witchers as abominations. The first episode of the season will adapt The Last Wish’s “A Grain of Truth,” featuring a character named Nivellen, a priestess cursed to become a “monster in a monster’s skin” as he was already a “monster in a man’s skin.” In the book, Geralt encounters Nivellen while investigating the deaths of a merchant and his female companion. That being said, our heroes will indeed have their hands (and hopefully, their pockets) full from the jump.
