Netflix has released a set of exciting new images from The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which highlight some of the action packed moments from the upcoming anime movie. Slated for release on August 23, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf deviates from the primary protagonist of The Witcher franchise, Geralt of Rivia, instead focusing on his mentor, Vesemir. Set many years before Geralt's birth, the movie will act as an official prequel to The Witcher TV show, featuring an original story which has previously only been alluded to in Andrzej Sapkowski's series of novels that The Witcher franchise is based upon.

Created by the talent at Studio Mir, who have worked on a slew of animated properties, including The Legend of Korra, Boondocks and DOTA: Dragon's Blood, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will showcase the adventures of Vesemir during his younger days as a less experienced Witcher as he travels around slaying monsters for money. Starring Theo James, who previously voiced Hector in Netflix's Castlevania anime adaptation, the movie will bring Vesemir's morality into question, as a dangerous new power rises on the continent. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will also introduce new characters including Lara Pulver as Tetra, Graham McTavish as Deglan, Mary McDonnell as Lady Zerbst, and Tom Canton as Filavandrel.

The first image displayed shows Vesemir riding on the back of a werewolf, introducing one of the fantastical and highly dangerous creatures from the lore of The Witcher, while the second image displays Vesemir using the Witcher sign Igni, which is used to produce a burst of fire. Another Witcher sign can be seen in the fourth image, as it shows Vesemir casting an Aard sign during combat, which produces a telekinetic wave to push back enemies. Alongside Vesemir, Tetra's might as a sorceress is also highlighted in these images, as she can be seen casting a powerful spell during combat.

From these images, it is clear that magic and sorcery will have a prominent role within the The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. By highlighting Vesemir's use of Witcher signs, it appears that Netflix have listened to fans criticisms of the first season of The Witcher, where many felt disappointed that Geralt's Witcher signs were not utilized enough. However, this may also stem from using the medium of animation over live action. Typically, animation allows for greater freedom and creativity during its action sequences, resulting in more spectacular uses of magic throughout, as can be seen here. With the second season of The Witcher set to be released December 17, 2021, it will be interesting to see whether more magic elements will be included in the upcoming season, and more importantly, how Vesemir will be introduced into the live-action world.
