Henry Cavill has shared he’s on Team Yennefer when it comes to who he would like his character in The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, to end up with, but Geralt would actually be better with Triss Merigold. One of the most popular universes in the fantasy genre is that of The Witcher, created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and which started as a series of novels and short stories and later expanded to video games. The Witcher finally got an English adaptation in 2019, debuting on Netflix to a lot of success and getting renewed for a second season before the first one was out.

Netflix’s The Witcher approached Sapkowski's stories in a very peculiar way, with a non-linear narrative that followed three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of season 1. These characters are Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), the title monster hunter; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress with a complicated past; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra. The Witcher season 1 established the basis of Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship, which will continue to be explored in season 2, but there might be a third player in this: Triss Merigold (Anna Shaffer).

The Witcher season 1 introduced various characters, of which some didn’t make it past one episode, while others, like Triss, appeared sporadically. Triss sought out the help of Geralt to contain a creature that was terrorizing Temeria, and together they discovered what was truly happening around town. Triss also healed Geralt when his throat was sliced, and once Geralt left Temeria, she didn’t appear again until the Battle of Sodden Hill, where she was burned in the chest by a fire torch while defending Cintra – but contrary to what many believed, she survived and will return in season 2. The Witcher season 1 showed hints of a connection between Geralt and Triss, who actually get involved in a love triangle with Yennefer in the books and video games, and Henry Cavill has already chosen his side: Team Yennefer, though, in reality, Geralt would be better with Triss, at least in the Netflix series.

Triss visits Ciri and Geralt in season 2 of The Witcher

In the source material, Triss falls in love with Geralt, but he’s the one who ends their relationship, though they remained good friends. Triss even helped Geralt when he asked her to come to Kaer Morhen as Ciri’s powers were getting out of control. The mage and the Lion Cub of Cintra formed a strong bond, with Ciri seeing Triss as an older sister, and the latter’s feelings for Geralt were as strong as ever. Between Yennefer and Triss, a relationship with the latter would give Geralt the stable life he deserves, and from what was shown in season 1 of The Witcher, their connection seemed more unique than the one with Yennefer, which was more a physical one. Now, fans of the books and games see Yennefer as Geralt’s true love, but if the Netflix show wants to shake up the universe of The Witcher and set it apart from the source material and the video games, then Geralt should be with Triss, giving the witcher the stability and love he has lacked throughout his life.

It’s unclear if The Witcher season 2 will address the love triangle between Geralt, Yennefer, and Triss, but with the show already renewed for a third season and the second one seeing the return of both sorceresses and Ciri’s training at Kaer Morhen, the show will inevitably have to show this part of their stories. Season 2, then, might set the basis for the love triangle, while also exploring Triss’ character a bit deeper as she was barely seen in season 1, and it’s also to be seen how the Geralt/Yennefer relationship will go when they reunite.
