Given the enormous success of the HBO series Game of Thrones, it was inevitable that other networks would want to get in on the action, including Netflix. Their series The Witcher proved to be something of an unlikely ratings success, and a significant part of its appeal was and remains the various characters (particularly since the narrative is at times a bit hard to follow, since it jumps across numerous timelines). These are powerful men and women who find themselves caught up in all manner of conflicts, many of which they cannot entirely understand.

Looking at them through the lens of the zodiac allows the viewer to gain a renewed appreciation for just how compelling they are.

Aries - Cahir

Cahir in The Witcher

Cahir is one of the more menacing characters on the television series, particularly since he seems to have as one of his sole purposes the kidnapping of Ciri. As a result, he is a very driven sort of man, always determined to see his mission through to the end, no matter how many people he has to kill in order to see it done. He’s also a remarkably dispassionate man, though he is prone to outbursts of anger.

Taurus - Geralt

Henry Cavill as Geralt in The Witcher

Geralt is, of course, the main character of the entire series, and he is a textbook Taurus. While he likes to give the appearance to the world that he is uncaring and unfeeling of anything except the money that he is going to get paid to do a given job, there is nevertheless a powerful well of feeling inside of him. It only occasionally makes an appearance, however, and far more often he likes to be stubborn.

Gemini - Cirilla

Crilla is also one of the more enigmatic characters in the series, for that reason she is also one of the most interesting. There seems to be a fundamental instability to her character, and there are times when her actions don’t seem to make a great deal of sense (though obviously part of this is also due to the disjointed way in which the story is told). However, she also has the kind heart that is also such a key part of the Gemini personality.

Cancer - Istredd

Though he doesn’t appear very frequently on the show, from the times that he does appear it’s very clear that he has strong feelings for Yennefer, and she seems to equally return his feelings. However, the fundamental difference between them is that she is more wedded to the notion of attaining power, while he truly does seem to think that feelings are some of the most important things in the world.

Leo - Geralt

The Witcher Season 1 Geralt Henry Cavill

As much as he exhibits the signs of the Taurus, Geralt also has a lot of the Leo about him. Certainly, he is one of the series’ most compelling characters (due in no small part to Henry Cavill’s stupendous charisma as an actor).

Likewise, though he likes to appear aloof to everyone around him, it’s pretty clear that all of those who encounter the Witcher inevitably fall under his spell (it certainly helps that he is also very attractive).

Virgo - Tissaia

From the moment that she appears, Tissaia makes it clear that she isn’t going to put up with nonsense from anyone, including and especially from Yennefer. There are times, in fact, when she seems to be pushing the young woman just a bit too hard. It’s worth pointing out, though, that Tissaia seems to always have been Yennefer’s best interests at heart, as well as the larger political conflicts of which they are all a substantial part.

Libra - Jaskier

The Witcher Joey Batey as Jaskier

Jaskier was one of the show’s more surprising hits, but it’s not really hard to see why he should be so popular with fans. After all, he’s a sort of free spirit, the quintessential minstrel that is so often part of the fantasy landscape. It certainly helps that he has a great voice. His generally happy demeanor is definitely a nice balance for Geralt, who seems to be unable to smile or feel joy (it’s a good thing that Libras are always adept at bringing balance into both their lives and those of others).

Scorpio - Fringilla

Fringilla standing in a room in The Witcher

Though she only appears rather fleetingly in the show, Fringilla is still a very important figure. After all, she’s a tremendously powerful sorceress, and she often has her own purposes that are not always obvious to those looking in from the outside.

Like many other Scorpios, Fringilla is something of an enigma, and it’s always hard to tell whether she believes what she says when she announces her plans or whether she has something else in mind that will only become obvious later.

Sagittarius - Stregobor

Stregobor looking serious In The Witcher

Stregobor is a decidedly unsavory character, one who seems willing to do whatever it takes to see that his own ambitions and visions are realized (which puts him in opposition to Geralt, in some key instances). However, that being said, as a Sagittarius he is also possessed of one of the signature traits of that sign: his intelligence. It’s fairly clear from the way that he interacts with other mages that they respect him for his insight and for his abilities.

Capricorn - Vilgefortz

For the most part, Vilgefortz proves that he is a capable mage and soldier, the kind of person that one can depend on to do the right thing in a battle. However, like so many other earth signs (including, of course, Capricorn) he also has a stubborn streak, one that makes him either unwilling or unable to follow advice (even when it might save his life), as happens when he doesn’t heed Yennefer’s warning about not not using up all of his power precipitately.

Aquarius - Jaskier

Jaskier

Though Aquarians have something of a reputation for being one of the most enigmatic signs in the zodiac, it’s also worth pointing out that they are by all accounts one of the most friendly. It would make sense, then, that Jaskier would fit into this mold, since he is one of the friendliest characters to appear in a show that seems to take dourness as a mark of its seriousness.

Pisces - Yennefer

There’s no question that Yennefer is a Pisces. From the beginning of the show she makes it clear that she is a person who is very much in touch with her emotions, sometimes too much so. While her sensitivity makes some underestimate her, they do so at her own peril. As anyone can attest, though Pisces might look like they are a bit flighty and not to be taken seriously, there is a remarkable depth and power to them that is worthy of respect.
