The Netflix series, The Witcher, has quickly established itself as one of the best fantasy series currently airing on television. With its signature wit and cynicism, it immerses viewers in a dark and sinister world, where monsters and politics constantly interact with one another. In that sense, it has quite a lot in common with Game of Thrones, the other enduringly popular fantasy series from HBO.

Thus, it is useful to sort the various characters that appear in The Witcher into the numerous noble houses that constantly compete with one another for control of the Iron Throne.

Geralt - Stark

Geralt the Witcher expresses wild rage.

Though he is a very cynical and world-weary person – something that can’t be said of most members of House Stark – it is also true that Geralt, one of Henry Cavill's best roles, has the Stark’s sense of commitment to duty, even though it can often be dangerous.

This is most clearly expressed in his commitment to helping watch over Ciri, and he does everything in his power to protect her from harm, even setting himself in opposition to his fellow Witchers. Nothing will stop him from making sure that she remains safe enough to fulfill her destiny.

Yennefer - Lannister

Yennefer the sorceress casts waves of fire in The Witcher season 1

One of Yennefer’s key traits is that she yearns for power. As soon as she entered training as a sorceress at Aretuza, she made it clear that she definitely had what it takes to be a Lannister.

She is a person motivated by ambition and by a drive to attain it by whatever means necessary. Among other things, Yennefer shows that she has the Lannister skill of political manipulation and, just as importantly, she also knows that sometimes it is necessary to show one’s extreme power to achieve one’s goals.

Fringilla - Targaryen

Like Yennefer, Fringilla is motivated by ambition, but she also has something more, a certain purpose that motivates many of her actions.

Having been converted into one of the most devoted followers of the White Flame of Nilfgaard, she has all of the Targaryen drive wed to that noble house’s particular vision of its own goals as being that which should be pursued at any cost. Though she can be ruthless and relentless, she makes it clear that she does all of this as part of a noble cause, rather than simply her own interests.

Ciri - Targaryen

Ciri in The Witcher Season 2

Fringilla isn’t the only member of the cast who fits into the category of the Targaryen. Ciri does, as well. She is the series’ chosen one, the person that all of the other characters and powers are trying to get to and control for their own purposes.

Furthermore, she also has all of the powerful charisma associated with the Targaryens, which means that many people – most notably Geralt and Yennefer – find themselves pulled very easily into her orbit, unable to resist her pull upon their lives and destinies.

Francesca - Lannister

One thing that can always be said about the members of House Lannister is that they will pay their debts. Once someone is on their bad side, they will stay that way until the Lannister has achieved the vengeance that they feel they deserve.

These are all traits that Francesa, one of the best characters to appear in the second season of The Witcher, shows in abundance. When someone kills her newborn child, she does the only thing that she knows will show her power: she kills many human babies in vengeance. It’s an action that would have made Tywin Lannister proud.

Vesemir - Tully

There are many brave characters and excellent fighters in The Witcher, and one of the bravest is Vesemir. He’s shown time and again that he is a formidable warrior but, just as importantly, he is also fiercely loyal and intelligent, committed to the well-being of the Witchers as a whole.

With his fierce sense of loyalty, he very much fits into the mold provided by House Tully, and he most closely matches up with the Blackfish, the fierce warrior who was one of that noble house’s most notable members.

Tissaia - Martell

Of all of the noble houses that appear in Game of Thrones, none are as well-known for producing powerful women as House Martell.

This makes it a perfect location for Tissaia, the Rectoress of Arteuza and thus one of the most formidable characters to appear in each season of The Witcher. What’s more, she shows that she has House Martell’s political cunning and ability to strategize, as well as their commitment to honor, as she demonstrates when she leads the northern mages against the attack from Nilfgaard.

Cahir - Greyjoy

There are few houses that have quite as checkered a history as House Greyjoy, who have endured quite a few losses but nevertheless continue to try to gain as much power as possible.

For most of the first season, Cahir was something of an enigma, but he has slowly come into his own in the second season, showing that he has all of House Greyjoy’s ability to endure and thrive, even when they are at the nadir of their fortunes.

Jaskier - Baratheon

No house has quite the same ability to have fun as House Baratheon, making it one of the best houses in Game of Thrones. Thus, it is uniquely suited as the noble location for Jaskier the bard, Geralt’s best friend and one of the most irreverent of the many characters that appear in both seasons of The Witcher.

What’s more, he has the powerful charisma that is also a signature mark of those who are born into this house, and it is one of the reasons that he is also one of the series’ most likable characters.

Triss Merigold - Tyrell

Triss Merigold in The Witcher

Even though she was something of a minor character in the first season, the second season of The Witcher sees Triss Merigold really come into her own. She has all of the traits that are most associated with Tyrell, including a warm and caring nature.

It’s for this reason that she makes such an important caretaker for Ciri once she comes to Caer Morhen, for she has the unique ability to become the mother that Ciri so desperately needs during this dark time in her life.
