The universe of The Witcher will continue to expand now with a prequel series, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin, which can reveal a big element that Ciri’s story will need in the near future: The Witcher’s multiverse. Created by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and after becoming widely popular after being adapted into video games, The Witcher saga got its first English language adaptation thanks to Netflix, and it became so popular that it has expanded thanks to an animated prequel movie and an upcoming live-action prequel TV series.

Netflix’s The Witcher follows the title witcher Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and princess Ciri (Freya Allan), who after the events of season 2 will be doing their best to stay safe as half the Continent is now going after Ciri due to her Elder blood. The Princess of Cintra has also been displaying more and more powers, which she still haven’t tamed, and at the end of The Witcher season 2, she showed that she can transport herself and others to other worlds, hinting at The Witcher’s multiverse and its importance in future seasons – however, instead of going straight into it in the main series, the multiverse should be introduced and explored in The Witcher: Blood Origin.

The Witcher’s Multiverse Explained

The Witcher Conjunction of the Spheres

The most important event in the universe of The Witcher is the Conjunction of the Spheres, a cataclysm that happened over a thousand years before the events of the series, and it affected the whole universe. This event trapped many creatures in the same dimension, and as it created rifts through which species from other dimensions ended up in others, this led to many conflicts and battles for dominance on the Continent between those who already lived there and the ones that arrived as a result of the Conjunction. Before the Conjunction of the Spheres, there was an infinite number of universes, parallel realities, Spheres, and Dimensions that were possible to traverse without much effort, but after the Conjunction, many of these vanished forever while others mixed.

As a result, there are now different worlds and planes in The Witcher’s multiverse, such as the world where the Continent is and where most of The Witcher series takes place, the world where Tir ná Lia is (which is also home to the Wild Hunt), and the Ether or Ethereal Plane, a mysterious dimension one enters for an infinitesimal amount of time during teleportation. However, not everyone can traverse these worlds and planes so easily, but beings of Elder blood, like Ciri and the Wild Hunt, can do so thanks to their innate portal abilities, as seen in the finale of The Witcher season 2, where Ciri teleported herself, Geralt, and Ciri to another dimension where they saw the Wild Hunt pass by.

How Blood Origin Can Set Up The Multiverse

The Witcher: Blood Origin will take the audience 1200 years before the events of the main series to explore the creation of the first Witcher and the ancient Elven civilization before its demise, through which Blood Origin can answer some of the biggest questions from The Witcher. In addition to that, Blood Origin will explore the events leading to the Conjunction of the Spheres, so it can give viewers a look at how the universe of The Witcher looked before the Conjunction and how much it changed after it. Blood Origin could even explore some of the other worlds and planes that were created by the Conjunction, thus making it a lot easier for The Witcher to bring the multiverse into the mix through Ciri’s powers, as it will surely be an important part of her story in season 3 and beyond.
