Netflix releases the first video for The Witcher: Blood Origin offering a behind-the-scenes look on production of the spin-off prequel series. The Henry Cavill-led mothership series is based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novels of the same name revolving around Geralt of Rivia as he ventures the medieval landscape known as The Continent killing monsters for pay. The Witcher: Blood Origin will be set 1200 years before the events of the first series and will depict the creation of the first titular hunter and explore the events leading up to the Conjunction of the Spheres.

Development on The Witcher: Blood Origin was first announced in mid 2020 when Netflix greenlit the six-part miniseries with season 1 writer Declan de Barra serving as creator and showrunner. Casting began earlier this year with Jodie Turner-Smith signing on to lead, though would subsequently depart due to scheduling conflicts and Sophia Brown taking over her role while Laurence O'Fuarain, Michelle Yeoh, Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis, Dylan Morgan and Jacob Collins-Levy would be added in the months that followed. Having finally assembled its cast, The Witcher: Blood Origin officially entered production in August.

Just a month after beginning production on the series, Netflix has unveiled the first look at The Witcher: Blood Origin. Given the series just began filming a month ago, it's understandable no proper footage for The Witcher: Blood Origin at this time. Additionally, with the streaming platform still in the early stages of building out its world from Sapkowski's novels, of which the prequel series is set prior to, it's equally understandable Netflix would want to keep the show's specific sets and production under wraps to avoid fans running rampant with theorizing and speculation online. The biggest thing to take away from the BTS video for the series is the promise of a focus on practical effects for its set pieces.

With The Witcher: Blood Origin exploring the creation of the titular race, the decision to move away from CGI does create a point of curiosity of whether monsters will be seen in the series and how they will be portrayed. The Witcher season 1 may not have prominently featured creatures, the majority of them were brought to life with CGI, begging the question of how the prequel's devotion to practical effects will change any monstrous appearances. As production is currently underway, fans will have to wait some time for word on its premiere date, though in the meantime can look forward to the highly anticipated arrival of The Witcher season 2 on December 17.
