After playing Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher trilogy, voice actor Doug Cockle thinks that Ciri should lead the way if The Witcher 4 ever sees the light of day. With the end of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt neatly wrapping Geralt's story, it could be time for someone else to take over. Who better than his adoptive daughter?

Although CD Projekt Red has its plate full with Cyberpunk 2077 and the studio head said The Witcher 4 will never happen, rumors of another game have circled since The Witcher 3 released its Blood and Wine DLC in 2016. A new title may not be coming any time soon, but with Geralt set to join the roster of fighters for Soulcalibur VI, The Witcher series isn't dead just yet.

Speaking to Gamereactor, Cockle admitted that it might be time for him to hang up his Witcher boots and let someone else take over. When asked if Soulcalibur would be his last time voicing Geralt, Cockle played dumb about the issue but gave his own ideas for how The Witcher could continue:

“I can only say I have no idea, although I think it will be. This is my own opinion, and CD Projekt Red knows what they are doing, and I have no idea what the plan is, but if I was CD Projekt Red, I would make The Witcher 4, but I would be focusing on Ciri.”

There have been various fan theories about how and why Ciri should take over for a fourth game, and with even the franchise's lead suggesting the same, developers at CD Projekt Red should start weighing up their options. With a move towards more female-first movies and video games, a Ciri-centric Witcher series could settle in nicely alongside the likes of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Last of Us Part II.

While some players would be happy to keep playing as the Butcher of Blaviken, there is the obvious worry that The Witcher 4 would just retread the old ground of the previous games. Looking at other popular franchises, CD Projekt Red could take a leaf out of Sony Santa Monica's book. While Kratos is still the main character of God of War, 2018's game introduced some new blood with his son Atreus. Although Atreus was only a secondary character in the game, it is easy to see how Sony is setting up a future where the Ghost of Sparta lays down his Leviathan Axe and his son takes over.

The pieces for The Witcher 4 have already been put in place thanks to Ciri being a playable character during The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red was testing the waters with what fans thought of Ciri, and given the game's glowing reviews, it seemed to have worked. There were several endings to The Witcher 3, so as long as players picked the one where Ciri survives, it makes sense that she comes back for The Witcher 4.  With all of this is up in the air at the moment, fans of The Witcher will have to cast their own spell and hope that news of a new game is coming sooner rather than later.
