As a former international assassin, it makes sense that Bucky Barnes speaks many languages, as he's demonstrated on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. One of the saddest moments in the early days of the MCU was watching Steve Rogers' best friend fall, seemingly to his death, in Captain America: The First Avenger. Of course, readers of Marvel Comics knew that likely wouldn't be the last the MCU would see of Bucky, and sure enough, the Winter Soldier would make his presence known in 2014's appropriately titled sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Now sporting a powerful mechanical arm attachment, this was Bucky at arguably his most formidable as a fighter. The problem, of course, was that it wasn't really Bucky doing the fighting, as between missions, he would get put back into stasis after a fresh mind-wiping by Hydra. Bucky was in essence himself a machine, programmed to the will of his controllers, which usually entailed murdering one or more high-value targets.

Those targets once famously included Tony Stark's parents, and now that Bucky is in control of his own mind again, the memories of his past acts haunt him during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As horrifying as that experience is and was, though, he's no doubt more effective as a superhero due to his Super Soldier abilities, and the techniques he was taught during training as a Hydra assassin. This very much includes a way with words, as Bucky is fluent in multiple languages, enabling him to travel the world and communicate effectively.

The Winter Soldier Can Speak At Least 6 Languages

Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

The MCU's Bucky has never explicitly said how many languages he speaks onscreen, but the number might be in the dozens, as he did once say about a group of other Hydra-created Winter Soldiers that they spoke a whopping 30 languages. However, Bucky wasn't trained alongside that group, so it's unclear if he was taught the same number of languages by Hydra. Based on previous scenes in the MCU, it's apparent that Bucky for sure speaks and understands Romanian, Russian, German, and Japanese, as well as his native English, of course.

The most recent episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier also showed off Bucky's ability to converse with the Dora Milaje in the African language of Xhosa, presumably picked up during his time being deprogrammed and rehabilitated in Wakanda. In the Marvel comics, Bucky has also been shown to speak Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin, although it's unclear if those also apply to his MCU counterpart. As more and more details of Bucky's past exploits are revealed, it wouldn't be surprising to learn that his mastery of languages extends somewhere near that 30 range he mentioned in Captain America: Civil War.
