Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves recently reunited for their upcoming rom-com Destination Wedding; however, the two might have accidentally gotten married in 1992 while filming Bram Stoker’s Dracula in Romania. Ryder and Reeves have both led impressive careers and are fixtures in the pop culture zeitgeist. Both have made a resurgence into the public spotlight in recent years thanks to Reeves’ role in the John Wick franchise and Ryders’ involvement in the Netflix series Stranger Things.
The two will star opposite each other in their upcoming project Destination Wedding, but it isn’t the first time they have shared the screen. Ryder and Reeves have starred in four films together over the course of their careers, the first of which was Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. Since then, they have joined forces on A Scanner Darkly and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Beyond their roles on-screen, it appears as if the two might be married in real life (well, kind of). During a recent interview, Ryder shared that the duo’s on-screen marriage in Bram Stoker’s Dracula might have been the real deal.
While promoting Destination Wedding, Ryder revealed to Entertainment Weekly that her and Reeves might still be married in Romania. Reeves was with her in the interview and the story is as crazy as it is adorable. The duo seemed nonplussed by the apparent revelation, and overall, seemed to enjoy reminiscing about filming Bram Stoker’s Dracula:
WR: “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So, I think we’re married.”
KR: “We said yes?”
WR: “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.”
KR: “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”
The power couple’s back and forth was likely in jest; however, stranger things have happened. It’s highly unlikely that a Romania wedding on the set of a movie constitutes binding nuptials. If they are married, however, they sadly missed their 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25-year wedding anniversaries. Following that logic, pop culture fanatics were also robbed of one of the greatest ‘90s couples that never was.
Though the two might not be tangled in martial bliss, they have still brought joy to millions across the world. Ryder and Reeves continue to shine on screen and fans can’t wait to see them together again. Thankfully, they won’t have to wait long. Destination Wedding premieres later this month, and hopefully, audiences will see the chemistry that has propelled them through 26 years of marriage - even if they didn't know they were married.
