Netflix releases the first trailer for Windfall starring Jason Segel, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Collins. Back in July of 2021, it was announced that Netflix was acquiring the picture in a deal with Charlie McDowell. Segel helped develop the story with McDowell, in addition to coming on in a starring role. Plemons recently picked up an Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog, while Collins can be seen in Netflix's Emily in Paris and Mank. The script is penned by Justin Lader and Andrew Kevin Walker, who are known for also writing The Discovery and Se7en, respectively. Previously, very little information about the film had been released, aside from the release date of March 18, 2022, which came earlier in February.

Now, the trailer from Netflix Studios gives more insight into the film, showing Segel's character robbing the vacation home of a tech billionaire and his wife, played by Plemons and Collins. While the trailer makes the high stakes of this kidnapping apparent, it seems there is still room for comedy in this crime film, as Segel struggles to open the purse he's stealing from and even has to take advice on his ransom demand from his victims. Actor Omar Leyva can also be seen in the trailer as an obstacle to Segel's robbery, and possible aide to Plemons and Collins. The film is being touted as a Hitchcockian thriller, evident in the movie's title card being eerily reminiscent of classic Hitchcock films.

The film is a markedly different tone from the recent work for most of these actors, except perhaps for Collins' recent work in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The trailer shows how the dire stakes and feelings of societal unjust manifest themselves into a new, modern form for the noir genre. While this type of movie has been dwindling in popular culture, Windfall could be just the picture to reinvigorate popular appreciation for the thrilling genre of film noir.
