The Winchesters star Meg Donnelly reveals that Supernatural's Jensen Ackles was on set and offered advice on certain scenes of the series. The upcoming The CW show is a prequel to the popular dark fantasy series that concluded in 2020. The Winchesters is set to premiere on October 11, 2022.

While Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean's (Ackles) battle against the hidden, dark forces of the world came to an end in 2020 after 15 years, The Winchesters promises to take fans back to the world of Supernatural. The series will follow the demon-hunting brothers' parents, John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Donelly), long before Sam and Dean were born, as the pair fall in love while facing their own demonic foes. Though the series is set before Supernatural, Ackles will reprise the role of Dean for The Winchesters, serving as the narrator of the prequel's story. And according to Donnelly, Ackles offered plenty of advice on how the actor should approach many moments of the show.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Donnelly reveals that Ackles was present for the production of The Winchester's pilot episode, where he would offer guidance throughout filming. She explains that Ackles would help guide her through how she should approach many small moments, such as how she should act out a lock-picking scene convincingly. He also lent his knowledge of Supernatural lore, explaining the background of certain terminology and monsters to the cast throughout production. Check out Donnelly's recollection below:

On the pilot, Jensen was on set every single day and has so much advice. I just remember on the first day, I was picking a lock to get in a door somewhere, and he was like, "Oh, we've got to do it like this so it's more convincing. Trust me, I've been doing it for a while." And I was like, "Oh, cool." So it was little things like that.

Drake is literally a foot taller than me and so [Jensen] was like, "When I did scenes with Jared I never sunk on my hip because then you're even shorter. So just make sure that you're standing on two feet because I've learned the hard way." I was like, "Oh!" Just like little tidbits like that. Or he would tell us details in the show, because there are Easter eggs all the time. He would just kind of tell us about different monsters; different hunter terms. It's really helpful to have him on set.

Both Donnelly and Rodger have praised Ackles' involvement in the series. As well as reprising the role of Dean, he also serves as an executive producer on the show alongside his wife Danneel, which allowed him to influence the show's direction and share his knowledge of the universe with the new cast members. With Ackles' extensive involvement, it is clear the Supernatural star hopes to keep the prequel series consistent and in line with the tone of the original show.

The Winchesters is set to revive the world of Supernatural for both a new generation and longtime fans who grew up alongside the original show. While Ackles' co-star Padalecki isn't involved in the prequel, it is clear that Ackles is determined to make sure it lives up to fans' expectations, making sure that even the smallest details are handled well. With Donnelly praising Ackles' guidance, The Winchesters is shaping up to be a faithful, promising expansion to the world of Supernatural.
