Showrunner Robbie Thompson addresses The Winchesters' future on The CW amid major network shakeups. A spinoff of the long-running CW series Supernatural, The Winchesters is a prequel show that follows a young John and Mary Winchester as they navigate their budding love-life while hunting down the killer Akrida. The series premiered in October 2022 and will conclude season 1 on March 7. To date, there has been no word on The Winchesters being renewed or cancelled by The CW.

In an interview with TVLine, Thompson says that The Winchesters season 2 isn't confirmed just yet. With the finale episode about to air, Thompson says he's "just sort of basking in that, ‘Hey, we made it to the finish line’" feeling, and that "whatever happens [next] happens." Read Thompson's full comment regarding The Winchesters' future below:

“I’ve spoken a lot with our partners at Warner Bros. because, obviously, we’re not sure what’s happening. We’ve talked about places…that we may have to look to down the road [if the show is not renewed and needs a new home]. But the short-term answer is I don’t actually know and probably won’t for a little while. I can only say that, as uncertain as these times have been, our partners at The CW and and Warner [Bros.], in particular, have just been really awesome to work with.”

Mary and John in The Winchesters

Concerns around The Winchesters' renewal comes in the wake of some major changes at The CW, with January seeing the network's expected renewals drop from 11 to less than five. Only days later, it was reported that The CW would drop even more scripted programming, with the network expected to only have three scripted shows for the 2023-2024 TV season. This decrease in original programming comes after a deal The CW signed with LIV Golf for the network to become the new home of live golf broadcasting.

Though the CW is known for renewing its series early, 2023 has been an unusual time for the network. Despite there being so few scripted programs on the network left, only All American has been officially renewed for season 6, leaving the fates of other major shows up in the air. With only two spaces left for CW scripted programming, The Winchesters is contending for a spot alongside other major titles like Superman & Lois, Walker, and Kung Fu.

While The Winchesters' fate is still uncertain, Thompson has admitted that he has begun writing season 2, just to see what John and Mary's continued journey could look like. Thompson says that The Winchesters would be open to finding a home on another network, but with The CW not confirming or denying the spinoff's cancelation, it's difficult to tell what the path forward will be. As major changes continue to happen at The CW, however, it's only a matter of time before The Winchesters' fate is ultimately revealed.
