Will Season 2 Updates: Is It Happening?

The show introduced viewers to a young William Shakespeare as he was finding his creative voice, but is Will season 2 ever going to happen? William Shakespeare doesn't really need any introduction since he's considered the greatest writer who ever lived. His most famous works include Macbeth, Romeo And Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing and King Lear, among many, many other works.

Even over 400 years after his death, Shakespeare's influence is as potent as it ever was. His work gets reinvented and reinterpreted year after year, including recent adaptations such as Michael Fassbender's Macbeth from 2015 or 2017 comedy The Lears, starring Bruce Dern and Sean Astin (The Lord Of The Rings). Even acclaimed crime saga Sons Of Anarchy was greatly influenced by Shakespeare's Hamlet.

TNT's Will is a drama that introduces a young William Shakespeare, played by Laurie Davidson (Cats). Will follows the young, hungry playwright who travels to London to make his name. The show was created by Craig Pearce, who wrote Baz Luhrmann's classic 1996 interpretation of Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood). While season 1 of the show received good reviews, is Will season 2 going to happen?

Will Was Canceled By TNT After One Season

In spite of Will's good reviews, lavish production design, and strong cast, TNT canceled the show after the season 1 finale in 2017. Unfortunately, Will's ratings were never particularly strong and declined throughout the first season. The lukewarm ratings, combined with the cost of producing the historical drama, no doubt led to TNT's decision to call time on the series.

Is Will Season 2 Ever Going To Happen?

While the series was never a ratings smash, it attracted a fanbase due to its contemporary take on the material and the strength of the cast, including Laurie Anderson's Shakespeare, Olivia DeJonge, Colm Meaney, and Ewen Bremner (Wonder Women). Like Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet or Shakespeare In Love, the series attempted to put a complimentary spin on Shakespeare to make it appealing to a younger audience, but the show never broke through in a major way.

Unlike other TNT shows The Last Ship or Animal Kingdom, Will proved to be a consistently weak performer despite the talent involved. While the show has a cult fanbase, the fact the first season ended in 2017 and there's been little to no sign of another network or platform attempting to pick it up suggests it's done. There are plenty of areas future seasons of Will could have dived into, but it seems the show is finished.
