Upcoming Will Smith Movies

Has there ever been a celebrity so synonymous with box office gold as Will Smith? He's been dominating the big budget, blockbuster game since the early '90s, guiding franchises like Men in Black, visionary sci-fi/fantasy like I, Robot, and comic book films like Suicide Squad, and heartfelt dramas like Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness to varying degrees of success at the box office. Smith has been an unstoppable force for so long and, despite some more recent ups and downs, it's no surprise to see he's looking to keep his hot streak going in the coming years.

2019 will prove to be one of the busiest years for Smith in recent memory, with the release of three films spanning the calendar years. Those films are the Disney live-action remake of Aladdin, the crime thriller Gemini Manand the animated comedy Spies in Disguise. With previous years only seeing Smith turn in one new film at a time, this marks a real uptick in Smith's visibility at the box office and the beginning of a very busy run for him professionally.

Smith is certainly going to have his hands full in the coming years with not only his 2019 releases, but many more in various stages of development. Let's take a look at all of Will Smith's upcoming films, which are set for release through, at minimum, 2021.

Gemini Man - October 11, 2019

Gemini Man 2019 poster with Will Smith

The world will be seeing double when Gemini Man arrives in theaters on October 4, 2019. It's taken more than 20 years to get Gemini Man to the screen since the script first began making the rounds in Hollywood in 1997 but Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has taken the lead and finally turned this hot script into a potentially hot blockbuster.

Smith will play the same elite assassin, Henry Brogan, but at two different ages: a man in his mid-20s and a man in his mid-50s. In the first trailer for Gemini Man, viewers get the full rundown on the film's plot: the younger Henry has been contracted to kill the older Henry, although he's unaware of this fact. All he is able to tell his boss, Clay Verris (Clive Owen), is that his target seemingly knows every move he's about to make and is able to dodge it. The older Henry is alerted to the younger Henry's existence by one of his team members, Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who confirms Verris cloned Henry without his knowledge years before the film begins. It's up to the older and younger Henry to take out Verris, combining their skills as the most talented hitmen in the world to put an end to this once and for all.

Spies in Disguise - December 25, 2019

For the first time in 15 years (since 2004's Shark Tale), Smith is lending his voice to an animated film. That film is Spies in Disguise, which also stars Tom Holland, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, and DJ Khaled. Smith voices one of the lead characters, the ultra-suave secret agent Lance Sterling. There's no mission Lance can't accomplish and he makes it look easy. So, naturally, when Lance's life gets turned upside down after being transformed into a pigeon, he must rely on ultra-nerdy teen tech wizard Walter Beckett (Holland) to help him adjust to life as a pigeon. Well, more like pigeon secret agent. Spies in Disguise was adapted from the 2009 short film Pigeon: Impossible, which follows a pigeon who gets trapped inside a nuclear briefcase and things get pretty wild from there. Created by Fox's Blue Sky, Disney will release the film on December 25, 2019.

Bad Boys For Life - January 17, 2020

Martin Lawrence Gabrielle Union and Will Smith in Bad Boys II

The adventures of detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Smith) continue in Bad Boys For Life, slated for release January 17, 2020. It's been 16 years since Burnett and Lowrey were on movie screens - and Bad Boys 3 is ready to catch fans up on everything that's happened to the once-hip detectives.

According to the official synopsis for the third Bad Boys film: "Marcus Burnett is now a police inspector and Mike Lowery is in a midlife crisis. They unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus."

Director Michael Bay did not return for Bad Boys For Life. In his place are directors Adil Al Erbi and Bilal Fallah. Road-tested screenwriter Joe Carnahan (who left the film as a director after creative clashes with Smith) and newcomer Chris Bremner worked together to craft a Bad Boys-approved script. And while Bay isn't back, Joe Pantoliano will be back in the role of Captain Howard. There will also be some new faces joining Burnett and Lowrey on the next chapter: Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, and the one, the only, DJ Khaled.

King Richard

Will Smith in Concussion

In March 2019, Smith was confirmed as the lead in King Richard, a biopic focused on Richard Williams, father to tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. This is the first time Smith has been in biopic territory since he played Dr. Bennett Omalu in 2015's Concussion.

Aside from the hiring of Monsters and Men's Reinaldo Marcus Green as director, little is known about how King Richard will approach the Williams story. It stands to reason the film will follow a traditional biopic pattern, tracing Williams' life from his childhood in Louisiana, to his life in Chicago, to meeting Oracene Price in 1979 as a father of five, proceeding to marry Price and have three children including Venus and Serena. From there, it's likely the film will focus on Williams discerning the athletic gifts of his daughters and his taking control of their tennis careers from the time they were young girls all the way through to their pro careers.

Bright 2

When Bright was released on Netflix in December 2017, it was reviewed as a mess and generally misguided flop by critics. Audience didn't seem to mind and instead were so curious that Bright generated approximately 11 million views in its first three days on Netflix. The film, which tells the story of a human cop (Smith) and Orc cop (Edgerton) coming together to get hold of a powerful wand before another mythical crime boss does, was likely deemed successful on these stats alone, leading Netflix to greenlight another film.

Bad Boys 4

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys II

Bad Boys 4 has been floating around since at least 2016, with news vaguely confirming it will definitely be happening at some point. There are no updates to offer in regards casting (aside from Smith and Lawrence reprising their roles as detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett), plot, director, writers, or release date. More news will likely emerge once Bad Boys For Life has been released.
