With The Mandalorian season 3 on the horizon, the next big reveal could be hearing Grogu speak his first line—but not with Yoda’s iconic speech pattern. When Grogu was initially revealed in the first season of The Mandalorian, his only communication was through cooing. But that changed when he met Ahsoka in The Mandalorian season 2. Ahsoka was able to use the Force in order to connect with Grogu and decipher some of his feelings. However, she seems to think that he isn’t necessarily forming words in his mind—just thoughts and feelings.
When Grogu does end up speaking, he will likely not speak with Yoda’s backward syntax. In the recently released Tales of the Jedi series, Yaddle—who is voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard and is another member of Yoda’s species—speaks completely normally. This confirms the notion that not every member of Yoda’s species talks like him. Since Yaddle does not speak like Yoda, it follows that Grogu does not need to either. He clearly understands when someone mentions his name, so it might not be long before he tries speaking for himself.
Why Does Yoda Speak So Strangely?
Yoda is an outlier of his species in that his syntax is backward—though there is actually somewhat of a canon explanation for this. Frank Oz, who was the original puppeteer and voice actor for Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back, revealed that Yoda talks the way he does because he is honoring the original Jedi from centuries ago. Oz’s theory is that Yoda continues to speak backward because he is keeping an older language alive. So while Yoda speaks in a unique way, it is not a characteristic of his species, but rather a choice he continues to make.
When Will Grogu Learn To Speak?
It’s very possible that Grogu could start speaking in The Mandalorian season 3. Grogu only makes an effort for things he cares about, such as when he trained with Ahsoka and Din to use the Force and lift a rock. He didn’t feel like using the Force to lift a mere pebble, but he did in order to get the silver ball he loves. He has learned about the path of the Jedi from Luke Skywalker, but chose instead to follow Din’s path and continue as a Mandalorian. Now that Grogu has chosen to remain with Din, there could easily come a moment when he is compelled to share his thoughts or feelings on something. Though, it’s best if Grogu keeps his species a secret.
While there is a lot of evidence pointing to the fact that Grogu doesn’t need to speak like Yoda, there is a slight possibility that he might. According to Ahsoka, Grogu grew up in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and he likely spent a lot of time training under Master Yoda himself. Just as Yoda honors the previous generation of Jedi with the way he talks, it’s possible that Grogu will honor Yoda by speaking like him. Regardless, it will be interesting to hear what Grogu has to say in The Mandalorian season 3—as well as how he says it.
