Will Forte Promises 'MacGruber 2' Will Be Written

The SNL sketch-turned movie MacGruber has earned itself a loyal fanbase, but was far from a hit in theaters, earning just over $9 million worldwide (though, on a $10 million budget). Hence the shock that greeted co-writer/director Jorma Taccone's recent announcement that ideas for MacGruber 2 are being actively developed.

According to Taccone, the intention is to develop a sequel storyline which allows for the return of both Will Forte (who's also working on the MacGruber 2 script) and Kristen Wiig - as 1980s fish-out-of-water couple MacGruber and Vicki St. Elmo, respectively.

While working the promotional circuit for the Adam Sandler comedy That's My Boy, Forte seemingly laughed off the idea that a MacGruber sequel would ever be made. However, during a later phone interview with Crave Online, the actor clarified his meaning:

“I wasn’t prepared to answer anything about ['MacGruber 2'] when I was talking to everybody on Saturday. I guess the best way to put it is the probability of us writing a ['MacGruber 2'] script in the next six months is 100%. The probability of somebody giving us money to make that script is somewhat less than 100%. We would do it if someone were to let us do it.”

Forte also elaborated on why he, Taccone, and fellow SNL alum John Solomon are bothering to write a second round of MacGruber madness, when the odds are stacked against them ever getting to turn it into an actual film:

“We will definitely write a ['MacGruber 2'] if only just to have fun. Like people who are into sports will go out and play pickup basketball. Comedy nerds will go write scripts. We actually have some ideas written down already and a couple of scenes but we’ve got to figure out exactly what we’re going to do. We’re definitely going to write it. It’s just a matter of if anybody would ever let us make it.”

Admittedly, such an approach will ensure that the MacGruber writing trio have carte blanche to script whatever deranged comedic gags and action come to their minds for MacGruber 2. Considering what they came up with in the first film (see: MacGruber's "technique" for distracting enemies - WARNING: That link is NSFW!), the task of topping all that in the sequel is a big one.

MacGruber Reviews

MacGruber may not have been critically-beloved, but even its detractors tend to agree: it's easily one of the best SNL-based movies released over the past two decades (not a high bar, we know). Moreover, a good chunk of the Screen Rant crew would agree that it's a frequently hilarious flick that went well-beyond merely poking fun at the MacGyver TV series and expanded its range to target just about anything related to the 1980s - be it mullets, Reagan-era geopolitical views, movies like Top Gun, and everything in between.

That's all to say: if MacGruber 2 ever gets made - and remember, that's a BIG if - there will almost certainly be a larger audience for it than the one which turned out for its predecessor. (Again, not a high bar to beat, but still...)
