Warner Bros. is prepping Coyote Vs. Acme, a big screen feature starring the indomitable cartoon icon Wile E. Coyote. The character, whose appearance was legendarily inspired by Mark Twain’s description of a coyote in the book Roughing It, made his debut alongside eternal nemesis The Road Runner in 1949’s Fast and Furry-ous. The two characters would go on to star in 49 shorts, the last being 2014’s The Flash and the Pan.

The golden age of Wile E. Coyote vs. The Road Runner shorts came in the 1940s and ‘50s under great Looney Tunes director Chuck Jones. Employing nine unbreakable golden rules for the characters, Jones crafted a series of shorts that highlight Wile E. Coyote’s mounting desperation to catch his dinner The Road Runner as he employs ever-more-elaborate traps, always purchased from the infamous Acme company. Ultimately, the Acme company would become as big a nemesis for the Coyote as the elusive Road Runner. Reports that WB wished to develop a movie built around the Acme company surfaced as early as 2010, and in 2014 Steve Carrell reportedly became attached to a planned CGI/live-action version of the project that obviously never came to pass.

As Deadline reports, Warner Bros. will bring back Wile E. Coyote and the company responsible for so much of his grief for a feature film entitled Coyote Vs. Acme. Jon and Josh Silberman have been hired to pen the movie’s script, with LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay producing. Jon and Josh Silberman’s credits include acting as supervising producers on the CBS comedy Living Biblically, as well as writing for FX’s classic sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The Silbermans also put in their time on the FOX animated series Bordertown, as well as the Hulu comedy series Deadbeat.

Wile E Coyote and Road Runner

Feature films built around Looney Tunes characters have mostly been compilation movies gathering together multiple shorts, but Warner Bros. has tried building proper stories around Bugs Bunny and the gang before, most notably in 1996’s much loved Space Jam. The combination of Looney Tunes and basketball stars is so appealing that Warner plans to go back to the well again for Space Jam 2, starring LeBron James alongside Bugs and the gang. A 2003 film, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, starred Brendan Fraser and Steve Martin among others, but went on to flop at the box office with only $68 million grossed against a budget of $80 million.

Clearly, the Looney Tunes brand still has a lot of relevance, and it’s therefore no surprise that Warner Bros. is trying to develop new movies built around its iconic characters, including new short films. Wile E. Coyote is an interesting choice in that he seems a bit of a one-dimensional character, at least compared to the trickster Bugs Bunny or the ceaselessly irritated Daffy Duck. It remains to be seen what kind of story the writing team of Jon and Josh Silberman whip up for Coyote Vs. Acme.
