Warning: minor spoilers for Action Comics #1028!

In the pages of Action Comics #1028, Superman reveals that, when seeking guidance, he often goes to Martian Manhunter before consulting with other heroes - a perhaps surprising glimpse into the personal lives of the Justice League, especially given that J'onn J'onzz is a character often forgotten when fans are discussing the roster of DC's most impressive heroes.

Superman and Martian Manhunter have had a complex relationship due to the nature of the DC Comics. While initially being friends due to their statuses as founding members of the Justice League and similar struggles being the sole survivors of their respective alien races, much was changed in DC's New 52 reboot. In the reboot, J'onn J'onzz was not a member of the Justice League, coming to blows with them in their early issues. DC Rebirth changed the relationship again, with the Martian Manhunter rejoining the League and functioning as a core member for the current onging series. With this status quo restored, it also seems that Superman and Manhunter have regained the bond they had in the past.

During a conversation with his son, Jonathan, Superman reveals that in the DC universe, psychics judge people differently than normal people would do. He was informed by Manhunter that every being has a base level of thought, and that psychics will often just bypass these thoughts in order to know a person's real character, which is the part that they make judgments on. Due to this, when desiring advice Superman says he will often go to psychics first, specifically naming Martian Manhunter, as they instinctively understand the nature of any problems from their friends' perspective rather than their own. Apparently the Man of Steel has come to rely on Manhunter as an advisor due to such abilities.

This conversation was initiated due to Superboy's blossoming romance with his Legion of Super-Heroes teammate, Saturn Girl. Jon is concerned with how this relationship will work due to the fact that she is a mind-reader, and is a bit concerned with her having constant access to his thoughts. Superman reassures him with this insight though, that even if she is able to know what he is thinking, she will judge him on his true character and not solely on what is on his mind at any particular moment.

This is a nice moment in an issue focusing very much on the bond between Jonathan and his father, and is a fun example of how Superman is passing on his "superhero" knowledge to his son. This kind of father-son bonding has been lacking in this latest run, due to Superboy being shuffled into the 31st century with the Legion of Super-Heroes. As such, these kinds of interactions are much appreciated when they do occur, fewer as they are. It is also good to see that Superman and Martian Manhunter have re-formed the friendship that they had pre-Flashpoint. It was unfortunate that Manhunter was pushed away from the League in general in the New 52 era, considering how much of a pivotal member he was in the League's initial formation in the Silver Age. Any examples of Manhunter being close with the other founding members is welcome, and hopefully there will be much more on Superman and Martian Manhunter's friendship in the future stories.
