Liv Tyler is returning to the MCU as Betty Ross, though her role in Captain America: New World Order has yet to be revealed. The original love interest of Bruce Banner's Hulk, Betty Ross was first seen in The Incredible Hulk, which starred Edward Norton in the titular role before he was recast for future installments with Mark Ruffalo. As such, it's been quite a long time since Betty has been seen in the MCU.

According to new reports, Tyler's Betty Ross is set to return in Captain America: New World Order. This follows the confirmations that The Incredible Hulk's Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson) will also be returning in the film as The Leader with General "Thunderbolt" Ross having been recast with Harrison Ford following the passing of original actor William Hurt. As such, it certainly seems as though the next Captain America film will be picking up on threads from the MCU's first and only Hulk movie, though Betty's exact role is currently unknown, as well as where she's been in the MCU since.

How Long It's Been Since Liv Tyler's Last MCU Appearance

Liv Tyler as Betty Ross in The Incredible Hulk

By the time of Captain America: New World Order's release in 2024, it will have been almost 16 years since Liv Tyler's last appearance as Betty Ross in the MCU with The Incredible Hulk in 2008 (and longer in-universe). With Avengers director Joss Whedon developing a romance between Mark Ruffalo's Banner and Natasha Romanov's Black Widow, it seemed as though the relationship with Betty was largely abandoned with Banner concluding she'd never be safe if they were together. Likewise, he'd also be in danger thanks to Betty's father, General Ross, who wanted the Hulk tracked down and his power removed to be used by the U.S. Government.

As far as what Betty Ross has been doing in the years since The Incredible Hulk, the details are slim. After she and Banner parted ways due to the Hulk still being hunted across the globe, she likely continued her work as a scientist and professor at Culver University. However, it was confirmed that Betty Ross did get snapped by Thanos in Infinity War and later brought back with the rest of the population in Endgame.

The combined presence of the Leader and the increased role of General Ross in the MCU communicate volumes about the plot of Captain America: New World Order. For example, the prevailing theory is an imminent transformation for Ross as the Red Hulk to mirror the comics, a process which was indeed instigated by the Leader himself. It's also been reported that Ford's Ross will have become the President of the United States following his previous appointment as Secretary of State, which was revealed in Captain America: Civil War.

Despite their longstanding estrangement, which was established in The Incredible Hulk, it's possible that Betty may try to intercede and stop her father from a potential corruption in his desire for power to rival Banner's Hulk. With no word as to Ruffalo's involvement as Bruce Banner in Captain America: New World Order, it's expected that Betty's role will be focused on her father for her upcoming MCU appearance. Regardless, it will be exciting to potentially learn what she's been doing and where she's been in the MCU since 2008.
