Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wednesday

Netflix’s show Wednesday features all the iconic Addams family members except one, and there is a reason why Grandmama is not in Wednesday. Tim Burton directed Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as the titular character Wednesday Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams. Wednesday also has appearances from Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) and the youngest Addams Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez). Instead of rebooting older stories of the Addams Family, Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams as she navigates her new life at Nevermore Boarding school. A more twisted version of coming-of-age comedies, Wednesday explores new relationships while also fighting a serial killer monster and the dark secrets of her new school.

Despite most of the Addams family characters being part of Wednesday, Grandmama is not, even though she is a mainstay in the original show and movies. Although Grandmama has not been cast in Wednesday, she does exist. When Wednesday is investigating the meeting house at Pilgrim World in episode 3, “Friend or Woe”, Wednesday tells Eugene (Moosa Mostafa) that her Grandmama always said secrets were like zombies. Also, during Wednesday’s birthday flashbacks, Grandmama is shown in one of the animated sequences, so she definitely exists. Wednesday is focused on Wednesday and her journey at Nevermore and even Morticia and Gomez are not heavily featured in the 8 episodes. Grandmama is not necessary to Wednesday’s story so was most likely not cast for that reason, instead, Wednesday just mentions Grandmama occasionally to confirm her existence.

Grandmama's Flashback Cameo In Wednesday Explained

Netflix; Wednesday Show; Grandmama

Grandmama’s cameo is hard to spot in Wednesday but comes when Wednesday is telling Eugene about her birthdays as a child. Wednesday’s other outcast friends at Nevermore had thrown Wednesday a surprise birthday party at Crackstone’s Crypt which was cut short by Wednesday having a vision. Wednesday was not initially pleased with the surprise birthday party but went on to tell Eugene (who was in a coma) about how she used to enjoy her birthday parties. Wednesday says her parents used to get her the “perfect cake” and the flashback shows a young Wednesday with a cake that has a small guillotine on it that chops a figurine’s head off. There are also figures of all her family, including Grandmama. This, along with Wednesday recalling her Grandmama’s advice, shows Grandmama does exist in the Wednesday adaptation, and looks similar to other adaptations of Grandmama.

Will Grandmama Appear In Wednesday Season 2?

Jenna Ortega; Catherine Zeta-Jones; Luis Guzmán; Isaac Ordonez; Tim Burton

There has been no official decision from Netflix about whether Wednesday will receive a second season, and it will most likely be based on the success of season 1. If a renewal is announced for Wednesday, it would potentially be announced in February 2023. However, Wednesday’s ending was left with some unanswered questions, so it can be hoped that a second season will be happening to answer those. Also, Tim Burton’s co-creator, Alfred Gough, has addressed the potential for a second season that could “explore more in the world of the Addamses (via ScreenRant). Season one of Wednesday has already touched on Morticia and Gomez’s past so future seasons would be expected to develop the Addams family even further.

Season one of Wednesday has clarified that Grandmama does exist in Tim Burton’s new take on the gothic family, and her character is not really needed in a season focused on Wednesday at boarding school. However, if future seasons plan to explore the Addams family even more, then season 2 is highly likely to introduce Grandmama Addams. Although season 2 would need to answer some more questions relating to Wednesday and Nevermore school, Wednesday has needed her families help throughout season one and may need even more Addams family expertise in season 2. There has been no indication that Grandmama will feature, but with the world of the Addams family being massively open-ended in Wednesday, audiences can hope to see Grandmama, and other key characters, join the clan in season 2.
