Warning! SPOILERS for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1.The climactic finale of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power featured all the answers to who Halbrand actually is. Throughout the episode Halbrand helps and influences the elven smith Celebrimbor, showing him how to harness the power of the little nugget of mithril belonging to the elves. Galadriel, suspecting that something is amiss, realizes that Halbrand is not the claimed king of the Southlands and that he is actually Sauron in disguise. Once Sauron’s full identity is revealed, he flees—but rather than abandon their work, the elves carry on with the creation of the first three Rings of Power.

At first, it might seem counterintuitive for Sauron to assist his enemies in making a power for themselves. However, his true intention is to subjugate the elves to him through their use of the Rings. Though he had no direct hand in forging the Three Rings, he helped them enough to know how they were forged and of what nature they are. This is a crucial aspect of his plan since he is able to bind the Three to his own One Ring when he forges it.

What Is Sauron's Plan?

Sauron in Lord of the Rings

Sauron lied about being king of the Southlands in order to gain the trust of the elves and influence them into making the rings. He actually fully intended for the elves to make the Three Rings on their own—without his help in the actual forging. Despite having given them the instructions on how to make them, it was imperative that they believe that they alone made the rings. This would make it easier for Sauron to sway and rule them without their knowledge of his meddling when he later uses the One Ring to bind them and invade their thoughts.

How Will The Other Rings Of Power Be Made? And When?

The Rings of Power Three Elven Rings

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has taken a slightly different approach to the order in which all the Rings of Power are forged. In the books, Sauron goes by Annatar—his fair form—instead of Halbrand. While he has a hand in helping Celebrimbor forge the other 16 Rings of Power, he does not directly help with the Three (similar to the show). The fact that he fled Eregion before assisting in making the other 16 Rings of Power leaves the door open as to how and when they will be made in season 2.

In the books, Sauron wages war against the elves after they complete all 19 Rings. In this way, he recovers the 16 lesser Rings and subsequently gifts seven of them to the dwarves and nine to men. With the change in order of the forging, it’s possible that the elves will gift the other Rings of Power they forge directly to their allies. Sauron uses his many aliases with a singular intent in mind: he will forge the One Ring to control the rest of the Rings of Power. Season 2 of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power will no doubt explore the forging of the famed One Ring and how Sauron attempts to rule all the races of Middle-earth with it.
