Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 6.

All signs point to Grogu leaving Luke Skywalker for the Mandalorian in The Book of Boba Fett, and there's a reason why that is especially devastating. In The Book of Boba Fett episode 6, Grogu faces a tough decision. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) tries to deliver his little green friend a Baby Yoda-sized Mandalorian armor gift in the episode, but Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) stops him. Realizing his presence would distract Grogu from his training, The Mandalorian star leaves the gift with Ahsoka Tano and departs the planet without saying hello to Grogu. At the end of the episode, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) offers Grogu a choice. He can accept Yoda's (Frank Oz) old lightsaber and continue his Jedi training, or he can take the Mandalorian armor and return to Din Djarin. But he can only choose one path.

The Book of Boba Fett episode 6 shows more of Grogu's backstory with Order 66. The Mandalorian season 2 already revealed that someone saved Grogu from the Jedi Temple when the Empire rose to power. And The Book of Boba Fett expands on that story. In the episode, Luke Skywalker helps Grogu remember his past, which is traumatizing. The flashback scenes show various unknown Jedi falling to clone troopers while protecting Grogu. However, it doesn't reveal which character ultimately saves Baby Yoda.

If Grogu leaves Luke for the Mandalorian, it will be sadder than The Book of Boba Fett lets on. All signs point to Grogu choosing the Mandalorian armor over the lightsaber. After all, Grogu's built a father and son relationship with Din Djarin over two seasons of The Mandalorian. However, Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader helped initiate Order 66, bringing an army of clones to the Jedi Temple. So in a way, Luke Skywalker's father brought on Grogu's pain. Darth Vader caused Grogu's traumatic childhood and is the reason he's been on the run. However, in a full-circle moment, Luke Skywalker, Vader's son, is helping to heal that pain. If Grogu leaves, that healing is over.

Grogu The mandalorian luke skywalker

Grogu has a chance to overcome his traumatic past if he stays with Luke Skywalker. Following Grogu's horrifying memories in The Book of Boba Fett episode 6, Luke Skywalker tells Grogu that the galaxy is a dangerous place. But he adds, "I will teach you to protect yourself." Grogu needs to continue his Jedi training to master his skills and learn to defend himself on his own. In The Mandalorian season 2 finale, Luke Skywalker says that he'll give his life to protect Grogu, so there's no safer place in the galaxy than with Darth Vader's son. Considering Luke's father caused Grogu's pain, Luke Skywalker helping the young padawan is a beautiful story twist. And unfortunately, it appears it's already coming to an end.

Of course, there's no easy answer for Grogu's future. Din Djarin had tears in his eyes watching Luke Skywalker carrying Grogu away in The Mandalorian season 2 finale. Fans want Mando and Grogu to be together again, and Star Wars keeping them apart is equally devastating. In all likelihood, The Book of Boba Fett will reunite Mando with Grogu. However, if Grogu wants to heal his pain, this is not the way.
