The beginning of the Stranger Things season 4 trailer has a mysterious voice warning a character, with the speaker’s identity coming from a new, powerful figure. Debuting three years after Stranger Things season 3, the upcoming installment of Netflix’s hit series is introducing a wide variety of upgrades and changes to the Upside Down and the overall scale of its powers. From Demogorgon tests in Russian prisons to a paranormal connection with Hawkins’ Creel House, Stranger Things season 4’s official trailer is increasing the scope of the Upside Down’s influence.

At the start of Stranger Things season 4’s trailer, an unknown, gravelly voice warns a mysterious character that they have “broken everything,” but that their “suffering is almost at an end.” As the voice narrates the trailer’s start, Stranger Things pans to the Russians’ destroyed Key machine in Starcourt Mall before focusing on the grandfather clock in the Creel House. The voice then returns at the very end of Stranger Things’ season 4 trailer, saying “it’s time” after focusing on a new Upside Down monster’s claws.

While the voice’s speaker isn’t clearly revealed in Stranger Things’ season 4 trailer, it seems to be coming from one of two probable figures: A Russian official or, much more likely, the new Upside Down villain. The only clue hinting at a Russian official speaking in the trailer is that it first pans to the Russians’ broken Key while saying the character has “broken everything,” which could possibly refer to Hopper breaking the machine in Stranger Things’ season 3 finale. Since he’s being held at a Russian prison where he’s subjected to torture and must fight Demogorgans, the voice’s line about their “suffering” almost being over could easily apply to Stranger Things’ Jim Hopper. However, as the trailer heavily focuses on a new, mysterious Upside Down villain, the supernatural figure is the most likely culprit.

As Stranger Things season 4’s characters traverse new areas of the Upside Down in the trailer, a Demogorgon-like figure is introduced in relation to the other-dimensional version of Hawkins’ Creel House. The voice is extremely gravelly and almost inhuman, which is very fitting for the new Upside Down villain, which almost resembles one of the White Walkers from Game of Thrones. The new Upside Down monster seems to be a human that was transformed into a Demogorgon, possibly as a result of the many tests conducted by Hawkins Lab or the Russians. It’s also been theorized that the new monster, which seems to be Vecna from Stranger Things’ inspirational Dungeons & Dragons, is actually Victor Creel (Robert Englund), who has been turned into a Demogorgon after his home’s connection to this world.

With the Mind Flayer destroyed by Stranger Things’ teens at the end of season 3, the series needed a new, even more terrifying villain for season 4, which it accomplishes by making the monster semi-human. It seems that the new monster may have been behind the Upside Down breaking into Hawkins all along, which may be why the voice says that they have “broken everything,” as in everything he’s tried to do to take over the human world. To make it even more clear that the voice in the Stranger Things season 4 trailer is the new monster, or even Victor Creel, the speaker’s last line says “it’s time,” which directly correlates to the grandfather clock located in the Creel House. Furthermore, the speaker’s voice sounds like many of the monsters voiced by Robert Englund, who plays Victor Creel in Stranger Things season 4.
