Thanos’ snap in the finale of Avengers: Infinity War is one of the most shocking endings to any comic book movie – let's look at which of the Avengers died in the aftermath. It seems like the obvious ending now, but fans weren’t sure Marvel would commit to the darkness of Thanos wiping out half the universe. The Decimation is an iconic moment from the comics, where the Mad Titan gathers all six Infinity Stones and succeeds in his quest of “balancing” the universe by killing half of all living creatures.

In many ways, the MCU had been building to this moment for years, and while it briefly appeared Thor had prevented it by stabbing Thanos in the chest with his Stormbreaker ax, the titan recovers and snaps his fingers regardless. The consequences are swift and devastating, with a number of major heroes turning to dust. Avengers: Endgame will deal with the aftermath of Thanos’ snap and how the survivors attempt to somehow reverse it.

Gamora and the Vision actually die before the infamous snap, with the former being sacrificed by Thanos to gain the mysterious Soul Stone and the latter dying twice – once by Scarlet Witch to prevent Thanos claiming his Mind Stone, and again when the Mad Titan reverses time to resurrect him and then yanks out the Stone. While its initially supporting players like the Winter Soldier who fall in the aftermath of Thanos’ snap, perhaps the most shocking thing about who dies in Infinity War is that major heroes like Black Panther, Peter Parker and most of the Guardians Of The Galaxy perish too.

While it’s doubtful the majority of these Avengers will remain dead by the time the credits roll on Avengers: Endgame – especially considering many of them front major franchises - it was still a bold move to commit to the bleakness of Avengers: Infinity War’s ending. The movie’s post-credit scene where Nick Fury also succumbs to the snap but manages to send an SOS to Captain Marvel first suggests Carol Danvers will play a major part in reversing the snap, but with theories ranging from time-travel to the Quantum Realm, it’s hard to say how the Avengers will save the day.

Based on who dies in Infinity War, it’s a safe bet that not every Avenger will come out of Avengers: Endgame alive. No matter what happens, the stage is set for an epic finale to Phase 3 of the MCU.
