Who catches Mjolnir in Thor: Love and Thunder’s trailer? Despite Mjolnir’s destruction by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, not only is it returning in Love and Thunder — and fully formed as well, not in pieces as it was previously seen — but it’s being wielded by someone other than Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder continues Thor’s journey to find himself that was started in Avengers: Endgame, and that’s led him to wanting to retire from being a hero. Unfortunately, his retirement is interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks to kill all the gods in the universe. Thor has to assemble a team to help him defeat Gorr, and that team includes the woman in the trailer who surprisingly wields a reformed Mjolnir.

The woman wielding Mjolnir in Thor: Love and Thunder’s trailer is none other than Jane Foster. Not much about her role in the film has been revealed, but based on various reports and interviews over the years, Jane will have a similar story in Love and Thunder that she did in the comics, where she begins wielding Mjolnir as Mighty Thor after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Ironically, becoming Mighty Thor only worsened Jane’s health as the transformation purged the chemotherapy from her body; it’s unknown if this part of her story will be maintained in the movie, but since that was a crucial element to her story, it’s likely to be included.

As for how Jane is wielding Mjolnir following its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok, that has yet to be explained, but there are a variety of ways for how she obtained it. For example, Avengers: Infinity War established Nidavellir as the birthplace of Mjolnir, so it would be easy enough for someone to have brought the shattered remains of Mjolnir there at some point so Eitri could fix it. The comics have also seen Mjolnir be destroyed and reformed multiple times, most recently in the God of Hammers storyline when Thor had to destroy it to purge the corrupted God Tempest from the hammer, so there’s certainly an established precedent for it. It’s also possible that Jane is wielding an entirely new Mjolnir, but the glowing cracks on the hammer make it more likely that the original has been fixed, somehow.

Once again, Jane’s story in Thor: Love and Thunder is going to use elements of her Mighty Thor story in the comics, but the exact way in which that’ll be translated into the MCU is unknown at this point. Equally unknown are the hows and whys for Mjolnir being reforged, even if there are plenty of ways for it to be explained. However, with the film set to release in July 2022, the answers to both of those questions should be given soon enough, whether in the lead up to the film’s release or in the film, itself.
