Calmatic, the up-and-coming director behind the House Party reboot, is set to helm the remake of White Men Can’t Jump for 20th Century. Released in 1992, White Men Can’t Jump follows two streetball hustlers, one white and one black, who form an unlikely—and often contentious—alliance. The sports comedy helped launch Woody Harrelson to post-Cheers fame and solidified Wesley Snipes, who had already collaborated with the likes of Abel Ferrara and Spike Lee, as a star. The film also features Rosie Perez as Harrelson’s motormouthed, Jeopardy-obsessed girlfriend.

20th Century first announced plans for a White Men Can’t Jump remake in 2017. Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC’s acclaimed series, Black-ish, is co-writing and producing the remake. Barris will share producing duties with professional athletes Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil under Griffin, Kalil, and Noah Weinstein’s Mortal Media banner.

Now, director Calmatic has been tapped to helm White Men Can’t Jump, Deadline reports. It marks the second feature length film for Calmatic, who just wrapped production on the House Party reboot. 20th Century has yet to reveal any details surrounding the movie’s plot, but it is expected to follow a similar structure as the original film.

Kid n' Play in House Party

Calmatic got his start directing music videos and has worked with Vince Staples, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Anderson .Paak, Pharrell Williams, and Jay-Z. His video for Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” won the 2019 MTV Video Music Award for Best Direction and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Music Video of the Year. Calmatic is also an accomplished commercial director, having produced ads for Sprite and Target, as well as a TurboTax ad that aired during the 2020 Super Bowl.

Calmatic’s upcoming involvement in White Men Can’t Jump isn’t the director’s first collaboration with athletes and sports moguls. His music video work piqued the interest of LeBron James and Maverick Carter, who tapped Calmatic to direct the forthcoming House Party under their SpringHill Entertainment banner. With House Party and now White Men Can’t Jump, Calmatic seems to be leaning into a niche for himself: modern reimaginings of nostalgic cult classics with Black characters at the forefront. In the case of White Men Can’t Jump, fans will have to wait a little longer for the much-anticipated casting announcements.
