HBO series The White Lotus has been renewed for season 2. Created, written, and directed by Mike White, who has written movies like School of Rock and Pitch Perfect 3, the miniseries follows a group of tourists as they check in to the titular Hawaiian resort. Murray Bartlett, Natasha Rothwell, Lukas Gage, and Jolene Purdy star as employees of The White Lotus who must cater to their guests increasingly radical whims. Jennifer Coolidge stars as Tanya McQuoid, a rattled woman who has come to spread her mother's ashes on the Hawaiian beaches.

Connie Britton, Steven Zahn, Sydney Sweeney, and Fred Hechinger star as the Mossbacher's, a dysfunctional family who brings their daughter's friend along, played by Brittany O'Grady. Finally, Jake Lacy and Alexandra Daddario star as newlyweds Shane and Rachel Patton whose honeymoon is crashed later in the season by Shane's mother, played by Molly Shannon. The White Lotus has earned rave reviews for its mixture of cringe comedy and dramatic revelations, with darkness roiling just under the surface. HBO Max initially ordered a six-episode first season of the series.

Now, Deadline reports that The White Lotus will return for season 2. The second season will leave the shores of a Hawaii for another White Lotus resort in a new locale. Additionally, season 2 will follow a different group of vacationers. No other details were provided.

White had previously teased a follow-up season, indicating that it would be stretching reality to bring all of the cast back together again for another vacation in a different location. He did, however, mention a follow-up in the vein of MCU-style storytelling where a few of the characters could make an appearance at a new location. First, though, he says he must see who may be available, as they only signed the cast for one season. Regardless, more of The White Lotus is good news all around - the show's mixture of black comedy and social commentary has propelled it to the top of the list of must-see shows on HBO akin to recent releases like Hacks and Mare of Easttown.

Ultimately, the anthology format is the perfect route to go for The White Lotus. Thanks to its critical acclaim, the second season should be able to attract big names and with White eliciting career-best performances from Britton and Coolidge, seeing various stars tackle another complicated and not-so-relaxing vacation should have just about everyone excited. The White Lotus' season 1 finale will bow August 15, but there's no word on when production of season 2 will begin.
