One of the key elements of the success of any series, but particularly a big-budget fantasy spectacle like The Wheel of Time, is the strength of its central characters. Fortunately, the new Amazon series has a cast that is as extraordinary as its production design, and they all bring power and depth to their characters, all of whom are people just trying to do their best against the forces that have been arrayed against them.

Viewing them through the lens of the zodiac provides for new depth and nuance, allowing for a richer understanding of their sometimes complex motivations.

Aries - Lan

There are few characters in the lore of The Wheel of Time quite as beloved as Lan, who has remained Moiraine’s faithful Warder for many years. He shows many times that he has all of the character traits of the Aries, particularly in his burning intensity and in his willingness to always throw himself into harm’s way whenever his Aes Sedai’s life is threatened. At the same time, he also shows that sign’s softer side, particularly in his relationship with Nynaeve.

Taurus - Nynaeve

Taurus is one of the signs most noted for stubbornness, and once they set their minds on something, it can be very difficult for them to change. That very much describes Nynaeve and her relationship with almost everyone, particularly Moiraine. She immediately decides that the Aes Sedai, and for that matter, her sisters, aren’t to be trusted - and this shapes and distorts her subsequent relationship with them, much to her chagrin. At the same time, she still remains a favorite Wheel of Time character among fans.

Gemini - Liandrin

Gemini is a sign that is most associated with having two sides of their personalities. Though she has hovered on the edges of the action, for the most part, it’s clear that there is more to Liandrin than she is willing to let on to anyone. For example, though she seems to offer a friendly ear to Nynaeve’s complaints and distrust of the Aes Sedai, she makes it clear that she’s doing so not out of any altruistic reason, but instead to strike back at Moiraine and to use Nynaeve for her own purposes. She is also poised to be a very powerful fantasy villain.

Cancer - Mat

Mat is a remarkably complicated character in the series, for while he remains committed to the well-being of his younger siblings, he betrays a lack of judgment when he steals a dagger from Shadar Logoth. Furthermore, he tends to be a demanding and somewhat self-indulgent person, prone to holding a grudge against others. This aligns him very much with Cancer, one of the zodiac signs most noted for their willingness to be self-indulgent and to put their own needs first.

Leo - Siuan

Leo is one of the most dynamic and powerful signs of the zodiac, and they tend to pull everyone into their orbit. It can, in fact, be almost impossible to resist them once they set their mind to something. These are all traits that one can associate with Siuan Sanche, one of the most powerful figures to yet appear in the series, the Amyrlin Seat of all of the Aes Sedai.

She would definitely need the formidable influence that her zodiac sign gives her to be able to survive and thrive in the atmosphere of the White Tower.

Virgo - Moiraine

Virgos are known for their logical and at times rigid approach to life and its problems, and once they decide on a course of action it can be almost impossible to dissuade them from it. Moiraine Sedai, one of the most powerful of the series characters and one of Rosamund Pike's best roles, definitely fits into the Virgo mold, and she shows time and again that she isn’t going to let anything, not even the lives of her charges, get in the way of seeing to it that the Dark One is at last destroyed by the Dragon Reborn.

Libra - Rand

A sense of justice and fairness is one of the motivating traits of Libra, which means that Rand, the Dragon Reborn himself, fits into this pattern. From the beginning of the series, he demonstrates that he cares deeply about the well-being of others, and that he will fight for them no matter what. His decision to go into the Blight alone is, arguably, the ultimate expression of his desire to be fair, as he doesn’t wish to endanger his friends. In all of these ways, he's this series' counterpart to Frodo Baggins.

Scorpio - Min

There's always an edge to Scorpio, the sense that they are playing a game to which only they know the rules. This is a trait of Min Farshaw, the important seeress who makes a late appearance in the first season. She makes it clear that she’s the type of character that definitely has an edge to them, as she isn’t afraid to tell even someone as powerful as Moiraine just what she thinks of them.

Sagittarius - Alanna

Sagittarians are well-known for their sense of fun and for refusing to bow to the wishes and demands of others, which makes this sign a perfect fit for Alanna. She is a very powerful member of the Aes Sedai and, as a member of the Green Ajah, she has decided to take more than one Warder, and it’s clear that all three of them have a deeply intimate relationship. She also shows that she has the sort of vivacious and irrelevant personality often associated with the Sagittarius personality.

Capricorn - Loial

Capricorns are regarded as one of the more dependable signs, so it makes sense that this would be the sign into which Loial would fall. As a member of the Ogier, he tends to take things at a much slower pace than his human counterparts, but he is also incredibly sensible and logical in his approach to problems.

Aquarius - Egwene

Aquarians are notoriously hard to pin down, and they always seem to possess an air of mystery. These are all traits that characterize Egwene, one of the main characters that resists easy classification. However, she also shows some of the other traits most commonly associated with the Aquarius, particularly in terms of her cleverness, which bodes well for her potential future as a member of the Aes Sedai.

Pisces - Perrin

Pisces is, arguably, the most sensitive of the water signs, and this means that they can often engage in brooding and are also prone to taking offense. These are all things that Perrin does throughout the first season of the show. At the same time, he also shows that he cares very deeply about the people in his life, as he makes very clear when he goes out of his way to protect Egwene from the predations of the Whitecloaks.
