There's a new Instagram prank filter that sets it sights on clowning anyone who uses it. The feature is set up like any normal "which ____ are you" filter, but this has one major twist. Once selected, it cycles through various famous clowns such as Ronald McDonald, The Joker, the Clown Emoji and Nemo — a clown fish. Instead of assigning one to you like other similar filters, however, a mirror of the user's face is shown. They're the clown.

It's a nice little prank that you can send to your friends, family or co-workers. Seeing their reactions when it's revealed that they are the clown is pretty funny. It can't really be used more than once on a single person without spoiling the joke, but you can continue to send it to new friends and family members who can turn around and send it to others themselves.

Calling someone a clown has often been a put down, but the use of it really picked up late last year, roughly when the new Joker movie came out. Replying to social media posts with a clown emoji or gif would indicate that you disagree with the poster, hence them being a clown. While we mentioned above that this was a fun filter to send to friends, some could also send it to people in a more mean-spirited way.

How To Use The Instagram "Which Clown Are You" Filter

Instagram good filters

Instagram's effect gallery still does not utilize a search bar, so finding filters isn't as easy as it should be. The best way to find any filter, including this one, is by simply Googling the name. If you still can't find it from there, there are more options.

First, if you see someone using the filter on their story, you can click on the name and it'll open up on your app. It'll then stay in your effect bar. Another way is to find the author of the effect (in this case it's @linkedinbio_) and go to their account. Go to the middle tab between their pictures grid and pictures they were tagged in to see their created effects. You should be able to scroll and find the clown filter or any other one you want from there.

Use of "Who Are You" filters have died down a bit since their boom in popularity in early 2020, and they needed a new viral one to regain that popularity. This "Which Clown Are You?" filter could certainly be that because as mentioned before, calling somebody a "clown" is a popular thing in today's social media culture, including Instagram. Don't be surprised if you see this one popping up often in your friend's stories.
