With Love’s Story

With Love stars Emeraude Toubia, Todd Grinnell, Benito Martinez, Constance Marie, and more. It follows four different couples, each having in common that one of the partners is part of the Diaz family. There are five episodes in season 1, each taking place on a different holiday. Each episode is less than an hour long and takes you through Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, and Dia De Los Muertos. The storylines are unique, interesting, and highlight Latino familial culture in an authentic way.

The Diaz siblings, Lily and Jorge Jr., are the primary focus of the show. They each are navigating through their own challenges surrounding finding love and a sense of purpose, while also juggling family expectations and judgment.

For example, we are first introduced to Lily as having recently broken up with her lawyer boyfriend and being nervous to attend her family’s annual Christmas Eve get-together alone, as she is fearful of her family’s questioning. Jorge Jr., on the other hand, is dealing with his own set of relationship and family problems. This family get-together marks the first time he is bringing a boyfriend home to meet his family, after coming out a year prior.

The show was created by Gloria Calderón Kellett, a writer on the popular show One Day at a Time. Kellett created this show with a mission of inclusivity and representation in mind. The show not only represents Latino culture, but also features LGBTQ+ representation.

When talking about the show, Calderón Kellett said, “This series really came out of the pandemic and feeling sad and missing family, missing big gatherings, and my Instagram was a barrage of violence against black and brown and queer nation people. And so I wanted to give something a salve to these communities specifically, where we could see ourselves trauma-free, experiencing love and joy and thriving”.

With season 1 only having 5 episodes, many fans were left eager for more of the Diaz family, especially after the cliffhanger conclusion. The first season was released in December 2021, and after a long wait of renewal confirmation, it has been announced that there will be a season 2 of the show.

Season 2 of With Love is said to be released sometime in 2023. Fans can look forward to seeing even more of the Diaz family, with season 2 having one more episode than the prior season. It has been reported that actors Martinez, Marie, Grinnell, King, Rodriguez, Toubia, Indelicato, Flynn, and Chiam will be reprising their roles in season 2.

When asked about what to expect in the upcoming season, Calderón Kellett has said that it will focus on a wedding and that each episode will be covering a day with events leading up to the big day. Prime Video has confirmed that the second season will follow a similar pattern as the first, stating that it will “follow the Diaz family’s relationship drama and love stories over the course of a year, with each episode taking place in the midst of a life-changing milestone or celebration.”
