As the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares to enter Phase Five of its movie releases, the film studio has also been busy creating new Special Presentations in line with its many films and television series. These new specials allow Marvel fans to watch new characters and comic concepts not adapted for screens before. Werewolf by Night, released in September 2022, is the first release in the Marvel Special Presentations.

Based on the Marvel Comic series created by Roy Thomas, the legendary composer Michael Giacchino steps into the shoes of the director of this sixty-minute special, as well as providing us with the musical score. Released as part of Marvel’s Phase Four, this Halloween movie special promises viewers something completely different from what Marvel has given us before. They’ve stepped away from their stories of superheroes saving the world and street-smart villains with the introduction of folklore monsters and mythical creatures, allowing viewers a glimpse into a darker side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What to Expect from Werewolf by Night

Gael García Bernal as Jack in Werewolf by Night

This Marvel special introduces us to Jack Russell, a man that is afflicted with a curse that causes him to transform into a werewolf during a full moon. Hiding his curse from the public, Russell becomes a successful monster hunter and soon finds himself summoned by Verussa Bloodstone to the Bloodstone Manor. He is among five monster hunters selected to participate in a hunt to determine the new leader who will have the power to wield the powerful Bloodstone. In a fight to become the new Bloodstone leader, Russell alongside the other monster hunters, find themselves facing a frightening and deadly fight that will ultimately see them facing a powerful monster for the prize.

This movie special has shown us that Marvel is going down a different route from their usual epic blockbuster releases, with their Special Presentations. With this film, Marvel proves that they’re taking their heroes down a darker path than before. This movie marks the first time that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has truly delved into the horror genre of films.

Instead of the hammer-wielding, shield-baring superheroes that we’re used to seeing, Werewolf by Night brings us a supernatural monster who acts as the hero of the story, the tragic character fighting his inner self while helping others. While the movie doesn’t shy away from showing us how dangerous Russell can be when he is forced to transform, it also reminds us of his humanity and kind nature, through his friendship with fellow monster Man-Thing and his feelings for Elsa Bloodstone.

Werewolf by Night stars Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell, Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, and Harriet Sansom Harris as Verussa Bloodstone.

How Werewolf by Night Honors Classic Horror Films

The mummy, creature from the black Lagoon, and Bride of Frankenstein

With Werewolf by Night, Marvel pays tribute to famous horror movies of the past. This Halloween special is filmed completely in black-and-white in homage to the classic horror films of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Michael Giacchino has openly admitted to having used many aspects of 1930s horror movies. He honors the classic filmmaking of the past by using very little CGI, providing a pure gothic atmosphere with his dark eerie shadows. Right from the beginning of the film with its old traditional opening credits to the very end of the story, Werewolf by Night plays out like the movies with Frankenstein and Nosferatu of the past. Fans of classic horror movies will certainly be appreciative of this.
