Three Pines is based on a series of mystery books. Collectively they are often referred to as the Chief Inspector Gamache series, after their titular character. Some also refer to the books as the Three Pines series, due to their shared setting of the fictional town of Three Pines.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache was first introduced in Louis Penny's debut novel, Still Life. In his debut, the inspector is tasked with deducing if the death of a local was murder or a hunting accident. What sets Gamache apart from other protagonists in a similar vein is his empathetic approach to his investigations. This series hits on all marks, making it one of Amazon Prime's best mysteries of the last few years, and one you shouldn't miss.

In the television series Three Pines, Gamache is portrayed by Alfred Molina. Molina is known for a wide variety of roles, such as Satipo in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Otto Octavius in Spider-man 2, Comte De Reynaud in Chocolat, Rahad Jackson in Boogie Nights, and many, many more. With such an extensive and lauded career, it should come with little surprise that Molina's performance as Gamache has been praised.

Originally, the actor was unfamiliar with the books, but he read the first few and quickly became hooked, completing them in time for the first few scripts to arrive. For more on Molina's own thoughts on portraying Gamache, check out our full interview.

The character Armand Gamache may have begun on the page, but the inspiration for him came from real life. Despite the character's origin in a murder mystery novel, there's a pretty wholesome story behind the creation of the series.

On her website, Louis Penny said her late husband Michael was the inspiration for Armand Gamache, and that they shared similar qualities: thoughtfulness, generosity, and the ability to love and accept love. She also credits her late husband with supporting her writing work and allowing her to quit her previous career as a journalist. So it's safe to say that she holds the character of Armand Gamache close to her heart.

To date, there have been 18 novels in the series, many of which have won awards. The latest, A World of Curiosities was released in November of last year and became a New York Times bestseller.
