Find out where to watch the 1994 classic The Shawshank Redemption, a heart-wrenching tale of friendship and the tenacity of the human spirit, where you either "get busy livin’ or get busy dyin."

Initially, somewhat of a flop at theaters, The Shawshank Redemption redeemed itself by quickly becoming one of the highest-grossing video rentals of all time, and renowned as an enduring cult classic. The story of Andy Dufresne and his prison friend Red had humble beginnings as one of several short stories published by Stephen King in 1982 under the title "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." Despite the small length of the source material, the film is considered one of the best screen adaptations of King's work to date and still sits near the top on the IMDB rankings of the greatest films of all time.

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption

We begin meeting Andy Dufresne, a mild-mannered banker who is falsely accused of murdering his wife and her lover. Served with two consecutive life sentences in Shawshank prison, another lifer, Red, bets Andy won’t make it through the first week. Red loses this bet, and finds Andy to be one of the strongest people he’s ever known.

In the confines of the prison walls, Andy navigates abuse both physically from his fellow prisoners and institutionally from the corrupt guards and wardens in his pursuit of justice. The film deals with the comradery of fellow prisoners and how these friendships make their lives bearable within the institution.

The Work Of Stephen King

Stephen King Had The Weirdest Criticism Of The Shawshank Redemption's Big Twist

Stephen King is one of the most prolific writers in the English-speaking world and has published a total of 80 full-length novels as of 2022, with countless short stories alongside. Known as one of the best American writers of all time, it is no wonder that King’s extensive work has been used as the source material for so many films and TV shows.

The director of The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont, took another two of King’s best-known works to the screen with 1999’s The Green Mile starring Tom Hanks and 2007’s eerie supernatural thriller The Mist. King also penned the novel that would go on to become veteran director Stanley Kubrick’s infamous horror film The Shining, conceptualized the horrific bloodbath for Sissy Spacek in Carrie, as well as the maniacal nurse Annie Wilkes in Misery.

In recent years, King’s seminal horror IT took the silver screen by storm, and now horror director Mike Flanagan is poised to adapt King’s Dark Tower series after a previous adaption of King’s Gerald’s Game.
