If medical drama Grey’s Anatomy met thriller Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and had a brand-new TV show baby, you'd get a beautiful child: Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches.

The show follows neurosurgeon Dr. Rowan Fielding (Alexandra Daddario), who finds herself facing a unique problem. When she gets angry, she murders people with her mind. With a problem like this, answers can’t be found in conventional spaces, like anger management classes.

Fielding’s unconventional quest for understanding as to why her anger creates such destruction leads her to find out that she is the heir to misfortune. She comes from a family of witches and now must confront the presence that has haunted her family for multiple generations.

Mayfair Witches' Origin

Mayfair-Witches-Lasher

The show is referred to both as Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches and just Mayfair Witches. The longer title is an acknowledgment of the show’s novel origins. Author, Anne Rice, released a series of horror trilogies in 1990 called Lives of the Mayfair Witches. These novels follow the story of a family of witches and their journey with a spirit named Lasher. The books earned great success, with all three debuting at #2 on The New York Times Best Seller list.

In December 2019, Warner Bros obtained the development rights to the book series. The show was created by Esta Spalding and Michele Ashford. The president of entertainment for AMC Networks, when asked about the show, said that it is designed to be a “wildly entertaining series in our emerging Anne Rice Immortal Universe, with a terrific creative team and cast.”

The Immortal Universe

Mayfair Witches is the second addition to what is known as the Immortal Universe, which is what AMC refers to the adaptations of Anne Rice’s novels as. Currently, these adaptations include her Vampire Chronicles series that was adapted into the show Interview with the Vampire, as well as Mayfair Witches.

In 2020, AMC acquired a portion of the Anne Rice book catalog. Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, The Vampire Armand, Pandora, Vittorio the Vampire, Blood and Gold, Prince Lestat, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, and Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat are all part of the Vampire Chronicles Series and were part of the acquisition. In addition, The Witching Hour, Lasher, and Taltos, which are part of the Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy and Merrick, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle, part of the Lives of the Mayfair Witches Crossover Novels, were acquired.
