How I Met Your Father is the highly-anticipated spinoff of the widely successful 2005 TV show that follows Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as he recounts his life story to his two children. The two released seasons of How I Met Your Father follow the same structure of the original show, with Sophie (Hilary Duff) telling her son the comedic story of how she met his father.

The show was created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who are both known for their work on Love, Simon and Love, Victor. Alongside Hilary Duff, the cast includes Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsely, and Josh Peck. The narrator, the late Bob Saget from Full House, was an important part of How I Met Your Mother, and the show’s predecessor has Kim Cattrall taking on this role.

What to Know About How I Met Your Father

This is not the first time that audiences were going to be met with a revival of How I Met Your Mother. In 2014, a television pilot was filmed titled How I Met Your Dad. This spin-off was created by the original creators of How I Met Your Mother, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. This show was going to star Greta Gerwig and differed from the original show in that the pilot would introduce both parents to the audience, eliminating the aspect of speculation and mystery.

The show did not air, and the then-CBS chair, Nina Tassler, explained that it was because of issues with the pilot that Bays and Thomas were asked to adjust. Bays and Thomas allegedly declined shooting a new version of the show, and the How I Met Your Dad project was not pursued further.

Fans were excited to finally get to see a spinoff when How I Met Your Father was released eight years later, in January 2022. It has currently not been announced whether the excitement will continue with a third-season pick-up.

Audiences remain hopeful, however, in part due to the continued push to have people see the show. After the show was released on Hulu, it was announced that it would be getting a secondary run on a linear cable network, Freeform, in April-May 2023.
